Kimono as Art The Landscapes of Itchiku Kubota by Dale Carolyn Gluckman, Hollis

About the Item

The Landscapes of Itchiku Kubota. Edited by Dale Carolyn Gluckman, Hollis Goodall. 160 pages, Hardcover book. First published November 27, 2008 Large beautiful hardcover coffee table book. This lavishly illustrated book showcases fifty-five masterworks by Japanese kimono artist Itchiku Kubota (1917-2003). Initially determined to unlock the secrets of dyed and painted Japanese textiles of the fourteenth to early seventeenth centuries, Kubota ultimately invented a unique method of decoration. His work combines stitch-resist and ink drawing with a complex layering of color to achieve hauntingly beautiful landscapes with richly textured surfaces and an impressionistic rendering of nature never before seen in the textile arts. Although Kubota produced kimono for Japanese celebrities, his primary endeavor was the creation of a series of monumental kimonos intended only for display. Mount Fuji, Universe, and the thirty-four-piece Symphony of Light are his most important series. The latter two are intended to be shown sequentially, much like the panels of a Japanese screen or decorated sliding doors. This entirely new approach to the use of the kimono as a vehicle for pictorial imagery has enabled Kubota's work to reach beyond the traditional boundaries of the single garment and elevated his work to installation art. This book accompanies a touring exhibition and features essays by Dale Carolyn Gluckman, Asian textile specialist and former costumes and textile curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Hollis Goodall, curator of Japanese art at LACMA, as well as an interview with Mr. Kubota's son and artistic heir, Itchiku Kubota II, by Derrick Cartwright, Director of the San Diego Museum of Art. Itchiku Kubota was a Japanese textile artist. He was most famous for reviving and in part reinventing an otherwise lost late 15th- to early 16th-century textile dye technique known as tsujigahana, which became the main focus for much of his life's work.

The Art of Giving 1987
Located in North Hollywood, CA
The Art of Giving 1987 hardcover book by Steve Lovi. Published by Harry N Abrams Inc, 1987. A richly illustrated tribute to the art of imaginative gift giving involving some of Europe's most fascinating people, including Sophia Loren, Prince Rainier, Salvador Dali, Audrey Hepburn and Rudolf Nureyev, to name a few. 235 photographs, 186 in full color. A glamorous look at celebrity gift-giving on an international scale features imaginative gift giving involving some of Europe's most renown people, Steve Lovi was the photographer. He has photographed a number of Kaffe Fassett's beautiful books. Stuart Jacobson's book was a wonderful discovery. Each page is a story about a gift from one famous person to another. With each story is a photograph of the gift. Steve Lovi's photographs also tell a story. This is a book to be read slowly; one gift at a time. " In the intriguing pages of this strikingly handsome and superbly illustrated book we come close to many of the outstanding personalities of our day - individuals who have achieved renown in the realms of literature, science, art, film, theater, statecraft, finance, fashion, high society. In every case there is the story of a cherished gift, and the text sparkles with anecdotes - romantic, touching, and funny in turn. How could it not, with a cast of characters that includes - to make a random selection - Twiggy and Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Jackie Stewart and Herbert von Karajan, Pope John Paul II and Sophia Loren, Gina Lollobrigida and Shimon Peres, Audrey Hepburn and Marcel Marceau, Anthony Quinn and Giorgio Armani. These are only a fraction of the talented and titled, the brilliant and successful gift givers who fill the pages of The Art Of Giving with romance and sentiment - and history. The author of this book has discovered what should have been obvious: that people's tenderest, most intimate, and most glamorous memories are tied up with gifts that they have given and received." The book includes 235 photographs, including 186 plates in full color. "The Art Of Giving" by Stuart E. Jacobson, Text by Drusilla Beyfus, Photography by Steve Lovi, and Design by John Lynch...
