About the Item

Volume bound in red silk velvet with a gilt rosette in the center of the front plate, chiseled with the insignia of the Sforza and Savoy families, contained in red leather slipcase in volume form with titles on the spine: very good condition, both of the binding and the papers. Accompanying the box set is a commentary volume bound in red leather with titles on the spine and front plate, in very good condition Facsimile of the Varia 124 codex preserved at the Royal Library of Turin. Work produced in collaboration with the Istituto della Enciclopedia Italiana founded by Giovanni Treccani in a limited edition of 750 copies (our copy bears No. 491). The Sforza-Savoia Legendary was made in 1476 for the Duke of Milan Galeazzo Maria Sforza and his consort Bona of Savoy: the codex can therefore be considered a kind of allegorical seal of the union between the two families. The name "Legendary" comes from the content of the work, a collection of legends from the Apocryphal Gospels and the New Testament: the stories of Joachim and Anne, Mary, Jesus and the Baptist, with a concluding section devoted to the Apocalypse. The text is accompanied by 324 illuminated scenes, the work of the great Cristoforo de Predis, who sets the Gospel scenes in 15th-century Milan, giving us a living testimony to the daily life of the time. Also embellishing the text are 107 illuminated and gilded initials. The beautiful binding was made by artisan workshops that echo the techniques in use in the late 1400s. The facsimile is accompanied by a Commentary edited by Pier Luigi Mulas with essays by Giovanni Saccani, Luisa Giordano and Pier Luigi Mulas
