The Life of Animals in Japanese Art, 1st Ed
About the Item
The Life of Animals in Japanese Art. Published by Princeton University Press, 2019. 1st Ed hardcover exhibition catalog with dust jacket. Few countries have devoted as much artistic energy to the depiction of animal life as Japan. Drawing upon the country's unique spiritual heritage, rich literary traditions, and currents in popular culture, Japanese artists have long expressed admiration for animals in sculpture, painting, lacquerwork, ceramics, metalwork, textiles, and woodblock prints. Real and fantastic creatures are meticulously and beautifully rendered, often with humor and whimsy. This book celebrates this diverse range of work, from ancient fifth-century clay sculpture to contemporary pieces. The catalog is organized into themes, including the twelve animals of the Japanese zodiac; animals in Shinto and Buddhism; animals and samurai; land animals, winged creatures, and creatures of the river and sea; and animals in works of humor and parody. Contributors address such issues as how animals are represented in Japanese folklore, myth, religion, poetry, literature, and drama; the practice of Japanese painting; and the relationship between Japanese painters and scientific study. Featuring over 300 masterpieces from public and private collections, many published for the first time, This book is a beautiful celebration of the connections between the natural world and visual and creative expression. From the exhibitions at: National Gallery of Art May 5-July 28, 2019, and Los Angeles County Museum of Art September 8-December 8, 2019. 323 pp.

Metropolitan Museum of Art: the Renaissance in the North, 1st Ed

The Metropolitan Museum of Art: The Renaissance in the North. Published by
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, 1987. 1st Ed hardcover with dust jacket. At roughly the same time that Italian art was beginning to reflect a reawakening of the classical spirit—an epoch and style we call the Renaissance—the arts of Northern Europe were experiencing their own efflorescence. Painting, sculpture, and the graphic arts were pursued with a new vigor in the Netherlands, in Germany, in France, and in England, and resulted in a vast body of work that constitutes one of the glories of Western civilization.
During the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the masters of the North developed styles quite distinct from those in the South: an attention to minute detail, particularly with regard to landscape, but also in domestic interiors; and an emotive piety that dramatized the sorrow and suffering of the Passion. Jan van Eyck's Crucifixion and Last Judgment present a horrific vision of the death of Christ and the damnation of sinners, set against a deep and distant landscape, sensitively and realistically rendered. The Lamentation by Petrus Christus...
