A satirical work looking at Paris in the early nineteenth century, being a parody of 'Pierce Egan's Life in London'. The journalist and poet David Carey (1782 – 1824) provides a satirical look at Parisian life. It was written after a visit to Paris where the author tried, but failed, to improve his poor health. He died of consumption two years later. The work is accompanied by Cruikshank's brilliant and droll illustrations, both as full color plates and as in-text vignettes. They are extensively and amusingly described at the front of the book (pp. ix-xvi). "One of the best imitations of Pierce Egan's Life in London, 1821... which had plates by Robert and George Cruikshank, the plates in this work being by George only. The frontispiece or engraved title here is similar in conception to that of Life in London" (Abbey, Travel 112). Condition: Very good +.
