About the Item
Miller, Francis Trevelyan (Charles A Lindbergh). Lindbergh: His Story in Pictures. New York and London: G.P. Putnam's Sons (Knickerbocker Press), 1929. Collector's Edition. Octavo, original three-quarter vellum, pictorial endpapers. Housed in a custom leather and cloth clamshell box.
This is the "Collector's Edition" limited printing of Lindbergh: His Story in Pictures, numbered 70 of only 250 copies signed by both author and publisher. This printing was issued with an original envelope actually carried by Lindbergh on his first International Air Mail Flight from Miami to the Canal Zone on the opening of the Pan-American Airways. Envelope is tipped to front paste-down.
"This anniversary book is designed as a repository for documentary evidence of the epochal achievements of this Viking of the Air." The book is profusely illustrated with 372 historic photographs, interspersed with Miller's descriptive text.
Charles A. Lindbergh (1902-1974) was an American aviator and the first mass media super star. Lindbergh is remembered for flying “The Spirit of St. Louis” on the first nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic in May of 1927. He departed on May 20th from Roosevelt Field, Long Island. After 33 hours in the air, flying solo, without sleeping, and coping with adverse weather conditions, he touched down at an airfield outside Paris. His feat astounded and delighted the world and secured his position as one of the most important figures in aeronautical history.
