The tour that followed would come to be regarded as one of the most legendary in rock ‘n’ roll history, propelled by the nervous intensity of a group determined to prove itself.
Present throughout the recording, release, and tour of Darkness on the Edge of Town, Lynn Goldsmith tracks these memorable steps in Springsteen’s journey to becoming an American icon. With illuminating forewords from both artists, the book gathers hundreds of photographs—classic, rare, and previously unseen—that bring to life a star at his hungriest. In Springsteen’s words, “These photos remain a record of a time when I truly played for my life, night after night.” It was a standard matched by the E Street Band, seen here in its historic lineup of Roy Bittan, Clarence Clemons, Danny Federici, Garry Tallent, Steven Van Zandt, and Max Weinberg. Spotlighted more here than in any previous photography collection, the electric presence of the E Street band allows Goldsmith to capture the often-overlooked social, collaborative side of the Boss’s creative process. Yet it’s not just the process she captures; it’s also the character of the music itself. From his humble beginning selling comic books in his native Cologne to his rapidly expanding book publishing empire, Benedikt Taschen has been all about living large — literally. Sumo, a 464-page, 66-pound compendium of Helmut Newton’s photography is one of the largest and heaviest books ever produced — it comes with its own display stand — and among the most expensive, too. Lynn Goldsmith
Lynn Goldsmith has documented over five decades of American culture, capturing stars from The Beatles and The Rolling Stones to David Bowie, Blondie and Iggy Pop. Taking advantage of the close access granted to acts in the 60s and 70s, she created insightful, candid shots that delved below the of rock and roll. Goldsmith has a particularly close working relationship with Patti Smith who she photographed for the cover of her legendary Easter album in 1977. The award-winning photographer has had 12 best-selling books of her work published; she also works as a documentary filmmaker and a singer and songwriter (under the pseudonym Will Powers). Goldsmith’s work is held in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Polaroid Collection, the Museum Of Modern Art, the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Photography, and the permanent collection of Museum Folkwang.
