About the Item

Wildenstein, Georges; Paul Jamot [intro.] Manet [Catalogue raisonné] L'oeuvre de l'artiste en quatre cent quatre-vingts phototypes Paris: Les Beaux-Arts, 1932. First Edition. 2 volumes 4to, 12 1/2 x 9 3/4 (318 x 247 mm); Vol.1: half title, advert, title, ii, 202, i pp; Vol. 2: 220 pp. of momochrome plates, index. 3/4 bound in maroon pebbled leatherette, marbled boards; marbled endpapers, top edge stained red, gilt title on spine; original grey paper covers bound in. Pages of Vol. 1 lightly toned on edges and copious pencilled notes in small script, adding to provenance and ownership of the works. Bindings tight and showing almost no signs of wear. This copy of the catalogue raisonné of Manet's work probably belonged to the son of the author, art dealer and collector Daniel Wildenstein (1917 – 2001), and the many notations found in the pages, especially in volume 1 where ownership and location of particular Manet paintings are stated, attest to this book as a living and working document for the famed Wildenstein Gallery. This work was part of "L'Art Français" series of studies and documents published by Les Beaux Arts on Rue de la Boétie, Paris. The first volumes comprise a monographic study with a chronology, a family tree and chronologically ordered catalogs of 546 paintings and pastels. The second volume brings together reproductions of works from various genres: portraits, still lifes, landscapes and genre paintings. With an introduction by Paul Jamot, Curator of the Musées Nationaux. The Author's father, Nathan Wildenstein, established an art dealership on the Rue La Boétie in Paris after fleeing his native Alsace during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71.[3] He first specialized in 18th-century French painting and sculpture, later expanding to Italian, Dutch, Flemish and Spanish art. Although he had been working in a tailor's shop when he began to trade in art he proved extremely successful, selling to European collectors such as Edmond James de Rothschild and later to Americans such as J. P. Morgan, Henry Clay Frick, and to the Kress, Rockefeller, and Mellon families. He opened a New York gallery in 1903 and one in London in 1925. His son Georges (1992 – 1963) followed in his father's footsteps and became a great scholar of French art. He edited the Gazette des Beaux-Arts review founded by Charles Blanc, and founded the revue Arts himself. Specialising in French paintings, he published several works on French art and wrote catalogues raisonné of the works of Gauguin and Chardin, Fragonard, and Gauguin (our inv. no. 1494). He was also passionate about race horses as was his son Daniel. Condition: Near fine. Price: $3,500.00
