Memoirs Year of Decisions and Years of Trial and Hope, Signed and Inscribed
About the Item
Truman, Harry. Memoirs by Harry S. Truman. New York: Doubleday & Company, 1955-1956. Both volumes signed and inscribed. First Editions with dust jackets. Two-volume set. Housed in archival slipcase.
Presented is Harry S. Truman’s two-volume set of his Memoirs entitled 1945: Year of Decisions and 1946-1952: Years of Trial and Hope. Truman signed and inscribed the dedication page on both volumes with the same inscription reading, “To Parky Morgan, From Harry S. Truman 3/29/58.” The books are displayed in the 1956 dust jackets. Both volumes were published by Doubleday and Company in 1955 and 1956, respectively, and are now housed in a custom-built archival slipcase decorated with an inlaid photo of Truman.
Harry S. Truman served as U.S. President during one of the most pivotal times in the nation’s history. Not wanting the position at first, Vice President Truman was handed the responsibility after Franklin D. Roosevelt suddenly passed away in office. The 33rd president told the press that, “I felt like the moon, the stars, and all the planets had fallen on me.” In the midst of WWII, Truman had to make momentous decisions despite never even being briefed on major topics like the atomic bomb while FDR was president.
In his memoirs, Truman provides his readers with a firsthand account of his years as President of the United States. The first of the two volumes, 1945: Year of Decisions, focuses on how he navigated the tumultuous political climate as a new president. With the Second World War coming to a high point, especially in the Pacific Theater, Truman explains his decision to use atomic weapons for the first time in history, destroying Hiroshima and Nagasaki. For a moment in time, President Truman and the United States was the undisputed military superpower in the world and this memoir explains how Truman navigated that political and moral sea. That same year, Truman helped to found the United Nations, and worked with his colleagues to attempt to create a better world despite tensions already rising with other nations.
The second of the two volumes, 1946-1952: Years of Trial and Hope, continue Truman’s personal account on the extraordinary issues the world faced post-WWII. This second novel describes a world suddenly equipped with atomic weapons and the men who had the power to use them. Throughout the book, Truman explains his role in the Cold War, the Truman Doctrine, the Berlin Airlift, the creation of Israel, and the beginnings of the Korean War. The years immediately following WWII proved to be a tense era relying solely on political relations between a handful of leaders. As president during this time, Truman provides an invaluable account of not only the events but the reasoning behind the actions of a man who was central to everything.

Baa Baa Black Sheep by Pappy Boyington, Signed and Inscribed, Original DJ, 1958
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Boyington, Gregory. Baa Baa Black Sheep. Fresno: Wilson Press, Inc., 1958. Twice signed and inscribed by Boyington. First edition, seventeenth printing. In the publisher’s original dust jacket, blue hardcover boards with silver titles to the spine.
This first edition, seventeenth printing of Baa Baa Black Sheep is twice signed and inscribed by Colonel Gregory “Pappy” Boyington. On the photograph, just opposite the half title page, Boyington inscribed, “Paul- your dad Jim was a great pilot and a privilege to fly with. Pappy 10/12/1980-” in black ink. On the half title page, the second inscription reads “To Paul Hill- With All The Best- Always- Pappy Boyington” and is dated “Oct. 12, 1980.” Published by Wilson Press in 1958, this book retains its original boldly colored red and green dust jacket and bright blue hardcover boards with silver embossed titles on the spine.
Col. Boyington was a Marine Corps Ace during WWII and famously commanded the legendary Black Sheep Squadron. Additionally, he was a Flying Tiger and eventually was awarded both the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross. This autobiography describes the unconventional hero and his fearless, successful leadership during the war while still maintaining his own wild and independent habits. With eight Aces in addition to Boyington and a confirmed 94 Japanese planes shot down, the Black Sheep Squadron became the most well-known Marine Corps fighter squadron of WWII. This thrilling true story of Boyington’s fall from favor and eventual recovery with his famous leadership is entertaining and well-written.
A fantastic association copy, this book was gifted in 1980 to Paul Hill, son of WWII pilot Jim Hill. Jim Hill was a pilot in the legendary Black Sheep Squadron (VMA-214), known for his combat experience and for being one of the original "plank holders" alongside Pappy Boyington. During his two tours with the Black Sheep, Hill flew a total of 70 combat missions, and also flew a third combat tour with VMF-211 on Green Island...
