About the Item

Nouveaux Plaisirs d'Architectures (New Architectural Pleasures), French book published by The National Center of Art and Culture Georges Pompidou in Paris, 1985. Les pluralismes de la Creation en Europe et aux Etats-Unis depuis 1968 vus a travers les collections du Deutsches Architekturmuseum de Francfort. (The Pluralisms of Creation in Europe and the United States since 1968 seen through the collections of the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt.) This first edition of the book was published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name, co-produced with the Center de Création Industrielle and the Deutsches Architekturmuseum, presented from February 21 to April 22, 1985. This book takes up the outline of this exhibition, which presents a panorama of various architectural trends from 1968 to 1985 in Europe and the United States through the collections of the German Museum of Architecture in Frankfurt, inaugurated in 1984. It is also an extension of the Images et Imaginaires d'Architecture event presented at the Center Pompidou by the CCI in 1984. A set of two hundred original drawings, thirty-five models, and a few paintings and sculptures testify to a new plurality of research and the current proliferation of architectural creation. About forty projects—nearly half of which were completed—as well as other contemporary currents, outside postmodernism, reflect this panorama. The reader discovers, for example, representatives, side by side: - the rationalist movement, such as Giorgio Grassi; - functionalism like Josef Paul Kleihues; - poetic and metaphysical rationalism such as Aldo Rossi; - morphological and typological rationalism in the person of Oswald Mattias Ungers; - from salvage populism through the trivial and eclecticism is Roberto Venturi; - the metaphorical embodied by Charles Moore; - the historicizing current such as Thomas Gordon Smith; - the most evident classicism worn by Fernando Montes. Finally, other architects present at the exhibition are referenced in the book: R. Abraham, M. Botta, P. Eisenman, F. Gehry, M. Graves, A. Grumbach, Haus-Rucker-Co, J. Hejduk, H. Jahn, J. P. Kleihues, L. Krier, R. Krier, M. Meier, F. Montes, A. Natalini, J. Nouvel, OMA Group, C. de Portzamparc, B. Reichlin, F. Reinhart, SITE Group, P. Starck, S. Tigerman, CHICAGO SEVEN Group. This panorama of the architectural stylistic approaches of the last fifteen years demonstrates that the duality between modernism and postmodernism goes through very subtle, nuanced, and typical stages of an era in search of its identity. Paris Secret et Insolite (Secret and Unusual Paris), French book by Rodolphe Trouilleux. Under the cobblestones, surprises: forgotten dead-ends, a cloister converted into workshops, a real-fake medieval house, the slabs of the guillotine, a 17th-century metro, a mineral water fountain, a tiny house, a miraculous Vespasian, a chapel in spare parts, Russian isbas, hidden gardens, revolutionary inscriptions, a forgotten cannonball, a working-class town in the upscale neighborhoods, a fashionable ox, abandoned convents, a washhouse facade, a bastion on the fortifications, an itinerant chapel, a pierced castle, sleeping villas, a lemon tree in a telephone booth, that's Paris! The French capital has not finished revealing its mysteries: a Palladian villa, a 15th-century tower, an acclimatization square, rats nibbling on a facade, an old Protestant cemetery, a medieval sign...
