About the Item

Niki de Saint Phalle, L'ombre et la Lumiere (Shadow and Light) is a French/English book by Numa Hambursin, published in 2019. This bilingual catalogue presents the works brought together for the exhibition Niki de Saint-Phalle: Shadow and Light, presented in Cannes simultaneously at the Centre d'art la Malmaison and the Villa Domergue. On a vast chronological scale, from 1952 to 2002, all types of media are represented: drawings, "Shoot" paintings, sculptures, mosaics, and totems created at the end of the artist's life. The list of exhibited works specifies the label, with a brief note for the major works. Accompanied by biographical references, this catalog will help the general public learn about an artist who appeals to both the popular and the initiated, a duality that the author, Numa Hambursin, emphasizes through the transition from "shadow to light." The status of the artist is indeed a question in this work: the biographical references present a woman between icon and artist, thus reporting on the reception of Niki de Saint-Phalle's work, while the text is that of an art critic, who relates his encounter with this work: "It is challenging to write about Niki de Saint-Phalle, because each statement contains its paradox, each light its shadow. In my lost confusion, I remain forever lost in its labyrinth." This is therefore a subjective approach adopted by a critic who confesses to having previously paid little attention to the artist he is now illuminating. Thus, his points of comparison are also very subjective: Niki de Saint-Phalle is compared to Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, and Takashi Murakami through the question of childhood. He reports on observations made by spectators of these works, notably a father and his young son, taken as a measure of collective appreciation. This personal position is assumed, and the question posed at the beginning of the work is rehabilitation. Numa Hambursin evokes a disappearance from the artistic scene at the start of the 21st century. This disappearance could be explained by the death of Pierre Restany, which nevertheless allows the field of research on the actors of New Realism to be opened to other theorists. This is a beautiful coffee table art book. Features: Title: Niki de Saint Phalle - L'Ombre et la Lumiere (Shadow and Light) Author: Numa Hambursin Hardcover book. Paris Secret et Insolite (Secret and Unusual Paris), French book by Rodolphe Trouilleux. Under the cobblestones, surprises: forgotten dead-ends, a cloister converted into workshops, a real-fake medieval house, the slabs of the guillotine, a 17th-century metro, a mineral water fountain, a tiny house, a miraculous Vespasian, a chapel in spare parts, Russian isbas, hidden gardens, revolutionary inscriptions, a forgotten cannonball, a working-class town in the upscale neighborhoods, a fashionable ox, abandoned convents, a washhouse facade, a bastion on the fortifications, an itinerant chapel, a pierced castle, sleeping villas, a lemon tree in a telephone booth, that's Paris! The French capital has not finished revealing its mysteries: a Palladian villa, a 15th-century tower, an acclimatization square, rats nibbling on a facade, an old Protestant cemetery, a medieval sign...
