About the Item
Over California by Kevin Starr and Reg Morrison.
A stunning volume of aerial views of California. Shot by Reg Morrison, it documents the state's diverse panorama as few of us ever see it--the thin line of the San Andreas fault, curvilinear rice fields near Merced, and, yes, even Liberace's piano-shaped swimming pool. While the text is couched as an environmental plea, from the air even chemical extraction plants have an eerie grandeur.
This coffee-table book has a literate text by former San Francisco librarian Kevin Starr.

Leopold, A. Starker; Dasmann, Raymond F. (editor), Illustrated by Tupper Ansel Blake
Science · Hardcover · Non-fiction · 144 pages.
This is a stunning photographic guide to the six major California regions--from the Sierra Nevada to the desert--and their wildlife. In a highly readable style that mingles authority and eloquence, Leopold reminds us of the aesthetic, educational, and scientific values of undeveloped land.
Oversized Wraps. Very Good +. First Edition, First Printing. Inscribed By The Illustrator. ISBN:0-520-06024-5. A wonderful photography book on the wildlife of California. Beautiful color photographs by Tupper Ansel Blake! This copy has a great inscription from Blake to singer/songwriter, Linda Ronstadt. A great association copy linking the photographer to Ronstadt, a famous nature activist.
Synopsis:
The universal spread of civilization has encompassed the wildness of California. While some of the original ecosystems have been preserved, others have been reduced to tattered remnants. Rich and varied habitats, with their plants and animals, are gone forever, destroyed by the conversion of valley lands to agriculture, the damming of streams, the cutting of forests, the paving of meadows. Wild California makes a persuasive argument for identifying and protecting areas of unspoiled California before they disappear.
This is a stunning photographic guide to the six major California regions--from the Sierra Nevada to the desert--and their wildlife. To A. Starker Leopold, conservationist, naturalist, wildlife biologist, and educator, the delicate balance between plants, animals, and humans in each community is precious and fragile. In a highly readable style that mingles authority and eloquence, Leopold reminds us of th aesthetic, educational, and scientific values of undeveloped land.
Tupper Ansel Blake, naturalist and wildlife photographer, has contributed one hundred color images that marvelously convey the special beauties of this state.
Fortunately, the rich legacy of early California can still be found, and Tupper Blake's images with Starker Leopold's words are powerful evidence that this wilderness is worth preserving for future generations.
About the Author:
A. Starker Leopold was Professor of Zoology and Forestry at the University of California, Berkeley. By the time of his death in 1983, he had become a leading figure in the study of the land and wildlife, receiving honors for his contributions to biological science, conservation, and education. Montecito Style: Paradise on California's Gold Coast
By Phaidon
Located in New York, NY
A privileged peek at the homes and gardens of the exclusive Southern California enclave, Montecito.
The seaside town of Montecito is often overshadowed by its neighbor Santa Barbara—which is generally how its residents like it. Though home and refuge to numerous celebrities, Montecito’s intentional cultivation of a low-key profile has allowed for a unique community to emerge, and with it, a multifaceted interior and garden design culture. Montecito Style: Paradise on California’s Gold Coast is the first book to present twenty houses and landscapes in an eclectic range of styles and rich architectural legacy that coalesce into a quintessential "California style."
The residences featured in this book reflect the diversity of design that has defined California living for more than a century: early standard-setters by George Washington Smith and an Andalusian-style abode by his protégé (and Santa Barbara’s first licensed female architect) Lutah Maria Riggs, Beaux-Arts mansions, converted carriage houses, nouveau palazzi, low-slung midcentury modern abodes, an iconic concrete-and-glass house from the 1970s, and even a studio apartment...
