About the Item

Three-part plainchant polyphonic manuscript of the Nicene Creed probably originating in Spain in the late 16th or early 17th century. This large format manuscript written on paper was produced for use by clergy during worship which, evidenced by the extensive fingermarking, certainly seems to have happened. We have no further provenance to offer beyond the attribution to Spain in the 16th century from the lettering on the spine of the 20th century binding, although the clefs and bar lines suggest a slightly later date. The Nicene Creed summarises the central tenets of Christian faith and is used in the liturgy of most Christian churches. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Large folio (41x28cm) bound in 20th century burgundy buckram with spine lettering: ‘Credo 16th Century Polyphony Spanish W.H.D.’ (the initials perhaps those of the composer Walford H Davies?) Card flyleaves and paper endpapers. 3 large bifolia, reinforced with linen along the gutter and sewn together. Vertical chainlines to the paper and a narrow, possibly armorial, watermark. The final leaf has been laid down as the blank area below the end of the music has been lost. Each of the three parts begins with the words ‘Patrem omnipotentem Factorem’ where the clergy would have taken up the chant after the opening ‘Credo in unem deum’ sung by the celebrant. The paper is extensively finger marked, especially close to the lower outer corner where the leaves would have been turned; ‘finis’ appears at the end of each part. The first part has an alto clef and uses diamond shaped notes with occasional bar lines; the text uses conventional ligatures to indicate contractions. The second part uses a tenor clef and the third, assumed to be the bassus, uses an alto clef.
