About the Item

Beurdeley, Cecile and Michel 320 pages with 111 pasted-on colour images, more than 300 drawings and black and white images, 12 chronological plates and 7 maps. The aim of this book is to give a general overview of Chinese ceramics, based on the current state of knowledge. We have tried to explain, using precise and simple vocabulary, the peculiarities of this art in which China excelled and which it never considered inferior. The Chinese have devoted a large body of literature to their ceramics: collectors' records, various treatises, scientific research works in which the authors deal with the craft techniques with varying degrees of competence. For a long time, this literature was the only source of information on Chinese ceramics. It has aroused great interest, but the subject is still far from being exhaustively covered. The excavations undertaken since 1930, particularly those by Japanese and Swedish specialists such as Fujia Koyama and N. Palmgren, who have uncovered numerous ancient kilns, as well as the research carried out in recent years by archaeologists in the People's Republic of China, have greatly increased our knowledge. In the eyes of Chinese and Japanese ceramics enthusiasts, ceramics occupies an important place in the hierarchy of the arts. The contemplation of a ceramic or a porcelain piece is a source of joy for their minds, which are shaped by the Chan or Zen philosophy. The collector makes the porcelain ring by striking it lightly with his nail; he picks up the vessel, feels it, strokes it to feel the quality of its glaze, tilts it to let the light shine on the surface, turns it over and over again. This sensory experience gives a better understanding of the object and the technique used. A drop of glaze on the bottom, a transparency, an opacity of the enamel color, a tangible structure of the surface delight the lover. He knows that this unevenness does not depend on the will of the potter, but on the magical action of the fire, which gives this work of art the spark of life and which transforms a simple earth into a "spirit-filled clay, fragile as a dream, indestructible as a thought," as Paul Claudel put it. The Chinese craftsman was neither a sage, nor a scientist, nor a geologist, but he had the pious zeal of an alchemist and set about conquering the technique with patience. He jealously guarded his workshop secrets and sometimes discovered, with little pleasure, what others had already discovered before him.
