Churchill, Winston S. The Second World War. London: Cassell & Company Ltd., 1948-1954. First English edition signed by Churchill in Volume IV. Period binding and presented in a custom archival slipcase. This six volume set of The Second World War by Winston Churchill is signed on the full title page of the fourth volume. The first English edition set was published in London by Cassell & Company Ltd. in 1948 with the last volume being published in 1954. Because Churchill insisted on several last minute edits to his work that he considered paramount to the printing in England, the series published without them in America six months before this first edition English set. The complete set includes: The Gathering Storm, Their Finest Hour, The Grand Alliance, The Hinge of Fate, Closing the Ring, and Triumph and Tragedy. In period binding, the books feature three-quarter crushed morocco leather, a decorative spine and various maps and plans throughout the books. The set is presented in a custom archival matching slipcase. The Second World War is a definitive history of the period from the end of the First World War to July 1945. Along with a team of assistants, Churchilll authored the set using both his own notes and privileged access to official documents while still working as a politician. The text was vetted by the Cabinet Secretary to remove any sensitive information, however the work still remained such a detailed insight into the war, that Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953. Churchill stated, “This is not history; this is my case,” but The Second World War is still considered one of the best comprehensive overviews of the conflict while still maintaining the personal voice and involvement of its author. Condition: Overall age appropriate. The books are bound in three-quarter crushed red morocco leather with a decorative gilt spine and gilt top edging. The boards are worn along the edges and spine, however the binging is still tight. Some discoloration from age present, but overall the pages are clean. Churchill’s signature on the title page of Volume IV is clear and dark in black ink. All six volumes are housed in a matching archival custom made slipcase featuring a photo of Churchill and a gilt facsimile signature. Dimensions: 8.75” H x 6” W x 10.75” D (six volumes with slipcase).
