About the Item
A 22-volume set of Oeuvres Complètes de Buffon, published between 1828 and 1829 in Paris by Furne, Treuttel & Wurtz. These early 19th-century rag paper editions explore “De l’Homme et de la Nature”, the nature of man and the natural world, as seen through the lens of famed French naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon. Each title page references “d’après les sciences naturelles,” or “according to the natural sciences,” and the set as a whole presents a sweeping Enlightenment-era perspective on zoology, geology, and the origins of life.
Uniformly bound in their original paper wraps, the books range in tone from pale taupe to pale blue-green, with clay and taupe spines that showcase handwritten and printed paper labels in varied states of wear. Some volumes show dog-eared corners, light staining, and spine losses, while others remain crisp and intact, a beautiful testament to their age and academic use.
Lightweight and slightly uneven due to their handmade construction, these volumes display beautifully whether upright or stacked. A rare and soulful collection for lovers of science, history, and decorative display.
Found in Paris, France, circa 1828 - 1829.
The set includes a total of 22 rag paper books.
Books are tattered and show signs of wear, bearing tears to the covers and light staining.
Overall condition is consistent with age and use.
The set of books measures approximately 27.5” W x 5.375” D x 8.5” H when standing together in a row.
