This is a 1926 edition issued by George Bayntun in Bath and handsomely bound by Hatchards in London. In several the sporting interest is only part of a broader picture of provincial society. The illustrations are often playful and ironic, portraying both hunting scenes and social situations in fashionable interiors. Robert Smith Surtees (1805 – 1864) had trained as a lawyer but left his London practice in 1835. After inheriting Hamsterley Hall near Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1838, he devoted himself to hunting, shooting, and writing for his pleasure, at first anonymously. He created many memorable personalities, often based on people he knew, including Jorrocks, a vulgar but good-natured sporting cockney grocer. The novels are engaging and vigorous, and abound with sharp social observation, with a keen eye for the natural world. Condition: Near Fine
