DESCRIPTION: FIRST EDITION IN THE ORIGINAL 12/13 PARTS, 13 hand-coloured etched plates by John Leech, wood-engraved illustrations, part 2 with slip for Bleak House, part 4 without the People's Illustrated Journal insert, part 6 with Chapman and Hall slip, part 11 with 8pp. Allsopp's Ale advertisements, part 12/13 with slips for Household Words, Punch's Almanack and Handley Cross as well as advertisements for The Field at front and 4pp. advertisements at rear, original pictorial wrappers with advertisements.
CONDITION: Some very light creasing, the odd neat repair or light retouching to spines, A NEAR FINE SET, preserved in custom full red morocco clamshell slipcase with gilt sporting motifs to spine.

This is a first printing of one of the great nineteenth-century English color plate books illustrating the scenery along the Seine from Paris to Le Havre. Luminous impressions of the plates, beautifully hand-colored. Engraved by Thomas Sutherland (1785 – 1825) and Daniel Havell (1785 – 1826) from sketches and drawings by Augustus Pugin (1812 – 1852) and John Gendall (1790 – 1865), the illustrations also include a vignette on the title page representing the Château de Rosny (home of the Duchess of Berry...
