About the Item

Three Books by Edna St. Vincent Millay. 1.) The King's Henchman, A Play in Three Acts by Edna St. Vincent Millay. Harper & Brothers, New York and London, 1927. (L-B date code for November 1927.) 1st Ed, 16th printing hardcover no dust jacket. She writes about her impressions of places, young love and traditions. Included are a string of emotional poems of her feelings against the brutalities of Fascist Spain, Nazi Germany, and imperialistic Japan, and Czechoslovakia. Including her views on other European countries during this tumultuous period. And a tribute to her friend and poet, Elinor Wylie, who had passed away. This was her last book before WWII. 2.) Fatal Interview, Sonnets, by Edna St. Vincent Millay. Harper & Brothers, New York and London, 1931. (D-F date code for April 1931.) 1st Ed, eighth printing hardcover with no dust jacket. In 1928, in Chicago, during one of her reading tours, Millay was introduced to a 22-year-old poet named George Dillon. By the next afternoon, Millay had written him a sonnet that swooned over, ''This love, this longing, this oblivious thing, that has me under as the last leaves fall.'' The first thing she did after they became lovers was to tell her husband. Dillon tried to get away from Millay's intensity, and the distance he kept from her Millay herself filled with the poems that became her best collection, ''Fatal Interview'' that was eventually published in 1931, and within months, at the height of the Depression, the book had sold an amazing 50,000 copies. 3.) "Wine From These Grapes" by Edna St. Harper & Brothers, New York and London, (M-I, 1934). 7th Ed hardcover no dust jacket. Published shortly after Fatal Interview, this next collection, contains a notable eighteen sonnet sequence, "Epitaph for the Race of Man." The first five sonnets prophesies the disappearance of the human race and indicates points in geological and evolutionary history from far past to distant future. The second set reveals humans' activities and capacity for heroism, but is followed by two sonnets demonstrating human intolerance and alienation from nature. NPT Books, a division of N.P. Trent Antiques, has a large collection of used and out of print books on art, architecture, decoration and antiques with a focus on 1st editions, signed and limited editions.
