About the Item
Toulouse-Lautrec, French book by Gerard Dorozoi, 1992.
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864 - 1901) is almost unique among artists because he became as famous for his appearance and personality as his art. The circumstances of Toulouse-Lautrec's life have often colored interpretations of his career within the artistic community of fin-de-siècle Paris.
The painter Toulouse-Lautrec is often overshadowed by the legend surrounding his illnesses, his existence on the fringes, and his love of brothels.
Without neglecting that his life was indeed pathetic - but also joyful - it is time to look at his painting and situate it in the artistic context of his time to grasp better its singularity. More or less direct criticism of academism and firefighters, initial collusion with Impressionism soon kept at a distance, indifference towards theoretical debates but relations of trust with the writers and artists of La Revue Blanche. These are some of the angles approaches taken in this book. Until the enigma of a work entirely dedicated to crudely showing places, shows, and women (singers, bourgeois, or prostitutes - without discrimination) ends up giving rise to mythology covering it.
Before that, there was the relevance of a gaze, the insatiable desire to grasp the truth of gestures, shapes, bodies, and the distressing secret that inhabits them. This approach uses documentation and synthesis to restore the aspiration and the look.
This is a beautiful coffee table art book.

Katsura, Hermitage and Gardens, a Moment of Perfection, French Book, 1986
By Modern History

Katsura, Ermitage et Jardins - Un Moment de Perfection (Katsura, Hermitage and Gardens, a Moment of Perfection), French Book by Office du Livre, Vilo Editions Paris, 1986.
Book by Arata Isozaki and Osamu Sato; photographs by Yasuhiro Ishimoto; French translation and commentary by Pierre and Suzanne Rambach.
A visit to Katsura, the imperial villa, is a circuit of an hour. One emerges amazed, astonished, and dazzled. What remains are the intense images captured by the eye, captured by the moment that flees without recourse.
Amid its garden and the four tea pavilions that border the central pond, built in the 17th century by Prince Toshihito, on the banks of the river that flows through Kyoto, Katsura remains the image of refinement.
Villa, also known as Katsura Rikyū, is an architectural gem located in Kyoto, built in the 17th century by Prince Toshihito. Designed as a place of relaxation for the imperial family, this villa embodies not only the elegance and serenity of Japanese architecture but also the perfect harmony between man and nature.
Visionary architects Bruno Taut and Walter Gropius of the Bauhaus movement, as well as Frank Lloyd Wright, Alvar Aalto, and Le Corbusier, were influenced in their designs by the Katsura Imperial Villa, particularly by its minimalist approach, clean lines, and profound respect for the environment.
This helped to disseminate and integrate the principles of Japanese architecture into the modern movement.
The elegance of this princely "hermitage" and its tea pavilions creates an atmosphere of serenity and highlights the natural beauty of its surroundings.
Its landscaped gardens, true contemplative gems, feature a meticulous arrangement of ponds, bridges, rocks, and vegetation, creating a subtle harmony.
It is said that the brilliant gardeners of the Katsura Villa brought about a revolution: for the first time, they introduced, into the landscapes they created by imitating nature, elements that could only come from man: straight lines, regular geometric curves, or, conversely, skillfully rhythmic ones.
In short, the Katsura Imperial Villa is a cultural and architectural treasure offering a fascinating insight into traditional Japanese aesthetics and philosophy.

By Modern History

Paris Secret et Insolite (Secret and Unusual Paris), French book by Rodolphe Trouilleux.
Under the cobblestones, surprises: forgotten dead-ends, a cloister converted into workshops, a real-fake medieval house, the slabs of the guillotine, a 17th-century metro, a mineral water fountain, a tiny house, a miraculous Vespasian, a chapel in spare parts, Russian isbas, hidden gardens, revolutionary inscriptions, a forgotten cannonball, a working-class town in the upscale neighborhoods, a fashionable ox, abandoned convents, a washhouse facade, a bastion on the fortifications, an itinerant chapel, a pierced castle, sleeping villas, a lemon tree in a telephone booth, that's Paris!
The French capital has not finished revealing its mysteries: a Palladian villa, a 15th-century tower, an acclimatization square, rats nibbling on a facade, an old Protestant cemetery, a medieval sign...
