Vida Americana Mexican Muralists Remake American Art. 1925-1945, 1st Ed

About the Item

Vida Americana Mexican Muralists Remake American Art. 1925-1945, by Barbara Haskell. 1st Ed hardcover, no dust jacket as published by Yale University Press, 2020. Mexico underwent a radical cultural transformation at the end of its Revolution in 1920. A new relationship between art and the public was established, giving rise to art that spoke directly to the people about social justice and national life. The model galvanized artists in the United States who were seeking to break free of European aesthetic domination to create publicly significant and accessible native art. Numerous American artists traveled to Mexico, and the leading Mexican muralists—José Clemente Orozco, Diego Rivera, and David Alfaro Siqueiros—spent extended periods of time in the United States, executing murals, paintings, and prints; exhibiting their work; and interacting with local artists. With nearly 200 works by over sixty Mexican and American artists, this exhibition reorients art history by revealing the profound impact the Mexican muralists had on their counterparts in the United States during this period and the ways in which their example inspired American artists both to create epic narratives about American history and everyday life and to use their art to protest economic, social, and racial injustices. This exhibition is organized by Barbara Haskell, curator, with Marcela Guerrero, assistant curator; Sarah Humphreville, senior curatorial assistant; and Alana Hernandez, former curatorial project assistant.

Located in CA, CA
Published by the Museum of Modern Art, 1st edition, New York, 1945. Hardback, English text. This exhibition catalogue is the first critical monograph issued by MoMA on a photographer. It was published in conjunction with a planned series of one-man focal retrospectives to bring some of the prominent American and European photographers to the fore, and photography has since then entered the category of fine art as far as MoMA is concerned. A catalyst and legend among his peers and the photography world at large, Strand’s revelatory photography captures a subtle change of mood, a slipt-second thought; his ‘nature morta’ of a kitchen bowl...

Cartier and America by Martin Chapman Hardcover Table Book 1st Ed. 2009
By Cartier
Located in North Hollywood, CA
Cartier and America by Martin Chapman Hardcover Table Book 2009. 176 pp. 1st Edition Published in 2009. Dimensions: 11" x 10" x 1". As opulent as the treasures it celebrates, this lavish volume presents Cartier's timeless designs worn by some of the twentieth century's most legendary figures. It's been one hundred years since the House of Cartier opened its doors on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Since then the luxury jeweler has been creating exquisite brooches, bracelets, tiaras, timepieces, and other items including scent bottles, so-called mystery clocks, and handbags many of them specially commissioned by their illustrious patrons. Readers will see up close Gloria Swanson's bracelets from Sunset Boulevard, Douglas Fairbanks s elegant watch, the Duchess of Windsor s panther brooch, and Grace Kelly s 10.47-carat diamond engagement ring, as well as items owned by Marion Davies, Vivien Leigh, Barbara Hutton, and Elizabeth Taylor. Author Martin Chapman offers an in-depth exploration of how Cartier conquered America, from its European birth in 1847 to its arrival on the other side of the Atlantic, and from its whimsical Art Deco creations to the red carpet prominence that linked the name Cartier with fame, wealth, and exclusivity. In addition to stunning color images of each object, the book features photographs of stars and heiresses wearing their Cartier jewelry. A beautiful volume for fashion aficionados, this trove of jewelry is a tribute to Cartier s...
