About the Item

Antique early-20th Century Imperial Russian gun metal cane handle, mounted with approximately 100 small old cut diamonds which spiral around the cane handle.The diamonds turn a simple ball shaped walking stick handle into something extraordinary. The sparkle of the diamonds against the aged gun metal is a wonderful juxtaposition, understated yet undeniably luxurious item. During World War I, Fabergé produced a range of objects crafted from copper, brass and gun metal often featuring the double-headed Russian imperial eagle. These items were commissioned by the Imperial Court and served as official gifts from Tsar Nicholas II. The majority of these wartime Fabergé pieces included small decorative bowls, tobacco boxes, and tea glass holders, each bearing the distinctive craftsmanship associated with the renowned jeweler. Among the most historically significant of these objects were those adorned with the cipher of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna. These particular pieces were personally distributed by the Empress on Easter Sunday in 1916 to wounded soldiers recovering at the Tsarskoe Selo military hospital. Tsarskoe Selo, the principal imperial residence located just outside St. Petersburg, was transformed into a hospital for the war effort. Empress Alexandra, deeply committed to aiding wounded servicemen, took an active role in the hospital, training as a nurse alongside her daughters. The Fabergé gifts, given as tokens of gratitude and encouragement, symbolized both the personal involvement of the Imperial family in the war effort and the enduring tradition of Fabergé craftsmanship even during times of hardship.
