Antique Gold Stick Pin Featuring Classical Grotesque Mask, English, c.1880
A fine-quality antique gold stick pin, featuring a dramatically expressive head cast in 20-carat gold, modelled as a classical grotesque or wind god mask, possibly inspired by Aeolus or ancient theatrical design. The face is detailed with wild flowing hair, deeply set eyes and an open mouth, pierced for depth and definition. The high-relief gold head is mounted on a hand-twisted 14-carat gold pin.
The combination of rich gold tones, unusual subject matter, and precise casting suggests English origin, dating from the late 19th century — circa 1880 to 1900. A distinctive and characterful example of Victorian gentleman’s jewellery, with strong classical revival influence.
