About the Item

This rare and captivating bracelet dates to the High Byzantine period (circa 1100–1200 CE), crafted in the Eastern Mediterranean and composed of richly pigmented glass with subtle silver stain detailing. Though appearing nearly black in certain lighting, the piece reveals a deep cobalt blue core with light blue translucence and intricate golden-hued motifs when held to the light. The bracelet’s engraved ornamentation features delicate scrollwork and stylized linear patterns typical of elite Byzantine decorative language. The iconography and form closely resemble a nearly identical piece housed in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (Accession Number: 81.10.234), emphasizing its cultural and historical significance. Formed from molten glass and shaped by hand, the bracelet’s thick profile and continuous band suggest it was not only decorative but also a symbol of status, possibly worn by a member of the Byzantine elite. The subtle iridescence, weathered patina, and minor surface abrasions speak to centuries of burial and oxidation—hallmarks of genuine antiquity. Dimensions: diameter 7.5 cm Condition: Excellent for its age; intact with expected surface wear and minor archaeological encrustation. Provenance: From a European private collection, prior to 1980. Comparable example: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Collection of Glass and Byzantine Antiquities. An extraordinary museum-quality piece, ideal for collectors of early medieval antiquities, Byzantine art, or ancient glass.
