About the Item

Cross-shaped chest clock. Silver. 17th century. It presents restorations. Portable clock in the shape of a cross with an openwork exterior showing Christian figurative scenes and the movement inside, a dial with a golden band with Roman numerals for the hours, a single needle and an engraved decoration around it, also with a religious theme; on the back, the back of the movement can be seen, with a delicate decoration, also openwork and based on plant motifs reminiscent of classicism, and a band on the case of the piece with simplified plant elements. Outside, we find ourselves on one side with Christ crucified, flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John, and the figures are surrounded by a delicate composition based on vegetable scrolls, with an angel's head at the foot of the piece. The other side shows the Resurrection of Jesus, with Christ emerging from the empty tomb and the soldiers on the sides, again with scrolls and on another angel's head. On the edges there are plant and floral elements, accompanied by figures located inside plates. Inside, and flanking the face of the clock, we are presented with Original Sin below and the Expulsion from Paradise, with Adam on one arm of the cross that forms the clock, Eve on the other, and the angel on top, brandishing the flaming sword (following in this way, in part, the biblical text). Several old portable type clocks are known that have been given a form that is not the usual in these objects. Thus, although the best known is the one in the shape of a skull in the Metropolitan Museum (Isaac Penard's movement from around 1650, box from around 1810-1820), and taking into account that they were by no means the usual type, several have survived. examples in the shape of a Latin cross. Let us remember, for example, some of those preserved in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford: one attributed to Cornelius Stimmer (active around 1660) presents Christ Crucified in front, flanked by the four Evangelists; another by Barthélemy Cheuillard (active 1636-1677) dated around 1650 has an uncut metal case and engraved decoration inside; Other examples, such as one dated around 1660 or another by Didier Lalemand (active 1675-1686) dated around 1660 or 1630, follow what is most common in these extraordinary examples, which is to present the outer case in rock crystal. This is also the case with the clock by Charles Bobinet probably painted by Werner Hassel and dated to the mid-17th century that is kept in the Metropolitan Museum, and with the one in the British Museum in London by Jean Rouseeau the Younger that is dated between 1640 and 1650 and was made in Switzerland. · Size: 7x5,5x2,5 cm International Buyers – Please Note: for those articles that need Export Permits (those older than 100 years), the obtaining of the Permit will be processed without additional expenses (if you choose the seller sends it to you), but the period for the obtention of it may vary from 10 to 35 days.

Silver Pax O Portapaz, Spain, 16th Century
Located in Madrid, ES
Portapaz. Silver in its color and gilded. Century XVI. Portapaz made of silver that has a handle (decorated with delicate plant motifs similar to those of the pilasters) and a female and a male bust at the bottom, as well as other architectural elements on the back, and, on the front, an architectural composition classicist basement (with busts flanking a flower and a cross), two pilasters (vegetal decoration and capital recalling the composite order) with entablature (flowers flanking an angel's head; moldings), and a semicircular arch finish with elements veined in relief under cross and flanked by two architectural motifs in the upper part. This composition frames and enhances a gilt silver relief where you can see the Lament or Cry over the Body of Christ, with the Virgin holding the head of Jesus, Saint John at her side, the Magdalene and other characters, a cross following the group and a landscape background with houses and plant elements. This architectural structure mentioned is similar to the one present in other 16th century portapaces, such as that of the Magdalena de Dos Hermanas parish (Hernando de Ballesteros el Mozo, around 1575); or that of the Galaroza parish (same author and date); or that of the portapaz of San Miguel de Jerez de los Caballeros (in some details); etc. As for the relief, it is possible to clearly see a strong Italian influence, and the similarity between it and important pieces such as the Portapaz known as “de Cisneros by Juan de Burgos (1493-1497; MuseoCatedralicio de Alcalá de Henares), as well as in paintings and reliefs. Also noteworthy are both the male and female busts in the lower area and the Maltese cross (or Saint John's) that appears in this area. This symbol was used since the 12th century as an insignia by the Knights Hospitallers of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, also known as the Order of Malta...
