Handmade Silver Filigree Bezalel Necklace, Jerusalem, ca. 1920

About the Item

This exquisite handmade necklace, crafted around 1920 by artisans of the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts in Jerusalem, is a masterwork of silver filigree jewelry. The necklace features a stunning symmetrical design composed of nine heart-shaped pendants, each delicately formed with intricate openwork floral motifs. A central silver bead crowns each heart, surrounded by petal-like filigree elements, radiating outward in a starburst pattern. Fine teardrop-shaped dangles suspended from alternating hearts add a sense of rhythmic movement and elegance. The chain elegantly cascades in two graduated drapes, connecting the hearts in a gentle arc. The overall shape of the necklace enhances the neckline with grace and formality. The craftsmanship is characterized by the hallmark Betzalel combination of Ottoman, European, and Yemenite design influences — precise, airy, and ornate. The heart motifs echo themes of devotion, tradition, and the romanticism of the early 20th century, while the filigree technique showcases the high level of artisanal skill fostered at Bezalel during this formative period in Israeli decorative arts. The dark patina visible in some images gives testimony to its age, while others show the cleaned silver glowing warmly under natural light. This necklace is more than an adornment — it is a piece of cultural heritage, reflecting the rich artistic identity of the Bezalel movement and the merging of East and West in pre-state Palestine. Every item in Menorah Galleries is accompanied by a Lifetime Certificate of Authenticity and additional documentation and information regarding the individual artifact and its culture.
