About the Item

Extremly rare three-dimensional ceramic medallion depicting a stylised female silhouette. Rich glazes with a juxtaposition of vivid colours. Signed on back. The piece is in its original perfect condition. About the Artist Jean Megard 1925-2015 In 1951, having graduated in architecture from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Paris, he joined the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and the Cours Roger. He successively attended the studios of Léopold Kretz, Ossip Zadkine and that of the painter Edouard Goerg. In 1952, after an apprenticeship with Jean and Jo Amado in their studio in Aix en Provence, Jean Mégard created his ceramics studio in Biot. He became friends with André Bloc and naturally joined the Groupe Espace. Alongside Magnelli, Hartung and Arp, he participated in the work of this group and at the same time he exhibited his painted works at the 1st Salon d'Octobre alongside Messagier, Duvillier, Poliakoff, Deyrolle and Zao Wou-Ki. In 1953, his ceramic achievements were exhibited by two of the most important Parisian galeries of that time, first at Galerie Mai as an exclusive ceramicist and at the Galerie la Roue in association with Elisabeth Joulia and Valentine Schlegel's work. In 1954 he won the silver medal at the tenth Milan Triennial for a monumental ceramic work integrated into Vittorio Vigano's experimental house. In 1958 Jean Mégard left Biot and settled near Aix en Provence to devote himself almost exclusively to painting and sculpture. During this "rebirth", he destroyed his entire ceramic production. However, he was chosen in 1968 by Pierre Soulages to realize a monumental ceramic work installed in the entrance hall of the One Oliver Plaza in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This building having recently been demolished, the work has fortunately been transferred to the "Soulages Gallery" of the Butler Institute of Art in Youngstown, Ohio.
