About the Item

A bespoken Mexican Modern silver necklace circa 1950s from Taxco, Mexico and crafted by William Spratling (1900-1967), an American designer and entrepreneur who established his silver studio in Taxco in the 1930s and revolutionized the silver design industry in Mexico by producing high quality silverware with modern designs. The necklace features a chain design alternate with elongated rectangular and small circular link and a box clasp. A large pendent of two open hands motif with intertwined thumbs makes the focal point. One hand is inlayed with mosaics of azure malachite. In the center of the other palm, there is a Taichi diagram showing ying and yang with the matching inlays. The ancient Chinese Taoism symbol marks the harmony of opposite forces and a universal union of movement and stillness. The pendent is a totem of new age that shows openness and peaceful embrace of the differences. The back of the pendent is branded with the WS mark used during the third period of design between 1951-1956. The necklace has a total circumference of 16.5". The pendent measures 5.1" w x 3'h. Total weight is about 84 grams (gross). This open hand design is illustrated on Fig2-218 on page 75 and Fig 2-321 on page 100 of the book "Spratling Silver: A field Guide".

Vintage Sculptural Silver Necklace by Graziella Laffi
By Graziella Laffi
Located in Atlanta, GA
A bespoken sterling silver necklace with five roundel bell shape of gradual sizes linked by joint chains, designed and made by Graziella Laffi (1923-2009), Lima, Peru, circa 1965. The subtly hammered roundels evoke a sense of history with the form found in pre-Columbian culture, yet the necklace appears beyond ethnic, it exuberates a confident and bold modernism. The necklace with Peruvian Cultural Ministry label to verso. Graziella Laffi was born in 1923 in Florence, Italy to Gino Laffi, a silversmith and artist. Following her family tradition, Graziella enrolled in master classes after elementary school, focusing on design and painting. She next attended Escuela de Bellas Artes de Puerta Romana for three years, where Gino taught, and then to the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, where she concentrated in architecture until the start of World War II. In 1947, Graziella, then twenty-four, immigrated with her parents to Peru. Gino later created a silversmith studio and showroom called Fabrica Laffi on Avenue Mexico, where Graziella initially learned her Craft. The Pre-Columbian culture in her adopted country inspired Graziella to travel and collect, which ultimately influence her design in the silver pieces. Graziella learned the metalworking techniques of the ancient Peruvian civilizations and rejected the current technology. She mostly used hammering, rolling and creating joints as the ancients do. As an ambassador of Peruvian culture, her work promoted the indigenous Peruvian art and rekindled the interest in its ancient heritage throughout South America, the United States and Europe. She exhibited her growing collection of Peruvian artifacts...
