About the Item

Vintage c. 1980s designer Alexis Kirk (1936-2010), articulated silver-tone sculptural choker necklace. Kirk was known for making bold, sculptural statement pieces. Made in NYC, USA Measures 16 inches around the neck, 8 inches long x 1 inch wide at the bottom. 4.5: inside neck. From Wiki: Alexis Kirk (29 December 1936 – 17 May 2010) was an American jewelry designer who also designed clothing and fashion accessories. Kirk, although born in Los Angeles, and brought up in New England, self-identified as Armenian.[1][2] His father, Paul Kirk, was an artist for Walt Disney, and his grandfather, Charles Vemyan, worked as a glass craftsman for René Lalique.[2] Some of Alexis's grandfather's jewelry is reportedly preserved in the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul.[1] Alexis Kirk studied art under Walter Gropius at Harvard University,[2] and also attended the Rhode Island School of Design before becoming a lecturer in painting, sculpture and music at the University of Tennessee.[1] Alexis Kirk's first design, which he personally wore, was a collar of Islamic glass beads and assorted charms, typical of his early work which featured amulets and symbols drawn from cultures and religions around the world, including the hamsa, Indian Paisley motifs, and Chinese fish.[1] Kirk was very superstitious, with a strong interest in the occult and spirituality, which was reflected in his work.[1][3] He started out with a small studio in Newport, Tennessee, selling jewelry to clients such as the Senator's wife.[3] This led to a contract to design a budget-priced line of jewelry for the Hattie Carnegie company, which was a commercial failure.[3] Following this, Kirk decided to move to New York to set up business there.[3] His first jewelry collection won him a Coty American Fashion Critics' Award.[1][3][4] The following year in 1971,[5] he diversified into clothing design, designing garments as a backdrop to his jewelry.[3] His first fashion collection was based upon medieval designs, with tunics over hooded metallic bodystockings suggesting chainmail.[5] His work, in addition to spiritual, occult, and ethnic influences, used materials such as exotic woods, pewter and plastic alongside more traditional metals and stones in silhouettes based upon organic human and animal forms.[2][6] The Duchess of Windsor, who said "I am absolutely fascinated by fake jewellery[...]; I think it is so good", owned a number of pieces by Kirk made from cork, wood, feathers, faux lapis lazuli and gilt metal.[7] Kirk's work was always designed on a large scale, the designer favouring sculptural designs in striking shapes and materials which made a statement.[8][9] Kirk continued designing through the 1980s, specialising in accessories and belts.[10][11] In 1988 he received an award from the Dallas Fashion Awards.[12] His famous clients, alongside the Duchess of Windsor, included Cher and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.[2] Kirk's elephant themed designs, made since 1972, were worn during the 1980s by the wives of Republican leaders, Nancy Reagan and Barbara Bush, although the designer was a registered Democrat.[13]

Sculptural Sterling Silver Choker Necklace by Graziella Laffi
By Graziella Laffi
Located in Atlanta, GA
A bespoken sterling silver chocker necklace very bold design by Graziella Laffi (1923-2009), Lima, Peru, circa 1970s. The chocker features six subtly hammered roundels radiating into a trio of Axe-shaped fixed pendants, with two smaller ones flanking a large central one. The shape of the axe was often found in the Pre-Columbian art. As a bronze age tool, it symbolizes power. The necklace is not chain link but cast and joined as a solid chocker with box clasp mechanism. The design radiates a sense of history with the primitive tribal geometry in form, yet the necklace appears beyond ethnic, it exuberates a confident and bold modernistic aesthetic. The drop of the necklace on the mannequin (not included) is 11". It has an approximate 16" circumference and weighs 320 grams (10.3 troy ounces). It was tested as 900 purity with XRF analyzer. There is a Peruvian Cultural Ministry label applied and a catalog sticker on verso as shown. Graziella Laffi was born in 1923 in Florence, Italy to Gino Laffi, a silversmith and artist. Following her family tradition, Graziella enrolled in master classes after elementary school, focusing on design and painting. She next attended Escuela de Bellas Artes de Puerta Romana for three years, where Gino taught, and then to the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, where she concentrated in architecture until the start of World War II. In 1947, Graziella, then twenty-four, immigrated with her parents to Peru. Gino later created a silversmith studio and showroom called Fabrica Laffi on Avenue Mexico, where Graziella initially learned her Craft. The Pre-Columbian culture in her adopted country inspired Graziella to travel and collect, which ultimately influence her design in the silver pieces. Graziella learned the metalworking techniques of the ancient Peruvian civilizations and rejected the current technology. She mostly used hammering, rolling and creating joints as the ancients do. As an ambassador of Peruvian culture, her work promoted the indigenous Peruvian art and rekindled the interest in its ancient heritage throughout South America, the United States and Europe. She exhibited her growing collection of Peruvian artifacts...
