About the Item

Antique early-20th Century Canadian solid silver playing cards case. This box features a smooth outer case, flared base which holds a cabinet-shaped box adorned with colourful enamel maple leaves. Upon opening the case, a deck of playing cards are revealed. The interior is lined with a smooth green felt. Marked on the rear of the base, "Ellis Bros - Toronto". In the 1920s, Canadian silversmiths, including the renowned Ellis Bros, were significantly influenced by English and French traditions, reflecting the broader cultural ties between Canada and these countries. Established in Toronto, Ellis Bros played a significant role in the country's decorative arts scene, celebrated for its exquisite craftsmanship and innovative designs. The firm's silver pieces, ranging from elegant tea sets to intricate flatware, showcased a blend of Victorian ornate detailing and the sleek lines of the emerging Art Deco movement. The persistent popularity of Victorian and Edwardian styles in Canada showcased English influence, with ornate and intricate designs being common. The resurgence of the Georgian Revival style also led to the incorporation of symmetry, classical motifs, and refined ornamentation in Canadian silverware. French influence was evident through the continued impact of the Art Nouveau movement, characterized by organic, flowing lines and nature-inspired motifs, and the emerging Art Deco movement, which brought modern, streamlined aesthetics with geometric shapes and a sense of luxury. International expositions and fairs in Paris exposed Canadian silversmiths to the latest trends, which they incorporated into their work. Additionally, some Canadian silversmiths studied in Paris, enriching their techniques and broadening their stylistic repertoire. Ellis Bros exemplified this blend of influences, with their commitment to quality and artistic excellence earning them a prestigious reputation and underscoring their importance in the evolution of Canadian silversmithing during the early 20th century. Antique 20thC American Solid Silver Three-Tier Cigar Box By Tiffany & Co c.1920
By Tiffany & Co.
Located in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent
Antique early-20th Century Tiffany & Co solid silver three tier cigar box, cedar-lined, rectangular shaped, the bottom compartment used for cigars and is mounted with a partly raised hinged cover supporting a smaller cigarette box and its lid supporting hinged match box with cigar clipper with ball handle, the exterior of the box is engraved with a scrolling foliage pattern throughout. Hallmarked Sterling silver (925 standard), Made for Tiffany & Co, stamped inventory number 123. One of the most iconic jewellery brands, Tiffany & Co's history begins from a small store that was opened on Broadway, New York in 1837. Two school friends Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young started to sell stationery, fancy souvenirs, china and haberdashery. In 1841 the company got a new partner, J.L. Ellis, who suggested selling silverware, jewellery and clocks. The firm changed its name to Tiffany, Young and Ellis. Charles Tiffany decided to move away from the classic Victorian style that was popular at that time. The owners of the company set up designers to seek inspiration in nature and interpret it in clean and harmonious forms. This innovative approach became known as the "new American style". In 1853, Charles Tiffany bought the shares of his partners and renamed the company to Tiffany & Co. Beyond jewellery, Tiffany met the growing demand for luxury items from affluent Americans. Solid silver snuff boxes, polished stationery, purses, bouquet holders, perfume bottles and French cosmetics could be found at Tiffany's. In 1851, the company hired New York's prolific silversmith John C. Moore to design silverware. Moore's silver designs won numerous awards at world exhibitions in the late 19th century. In 1878 Tiffany was awarded the Grand Prix for its Japanese-influenced silverware at the Paris World Exposition. The company became the first American jeweller to be awarded. Because of the California Gold Rush in the 1850s, Tiffany started to use gold and silver, extracted within the country. Alongside with the introduction of American gemstones...
