About the Item

Antique early-20th Century Canadian solid silver playing cards case. This box features a smooth outer case, flared base which holds a cabinet-shaped box adorned with colourful enamel maple leaves. Upon opening the case, a deck of playing cards are revealed. The interior is lined with a smooth green felt. Marked on the rear of the base, "Ellis Bros - Toronto". In the 1920s, Canadian silversmiths, including the renowned Ellis Bros, were significantly influenced by English and French traditions, reflecting the broader cultural ties between Canada and these countries. Established in Toronto, Ellis Bros played a significant role in the country's decorative arts scene, celebrated for its exquisite craftsmanship and innovative designs. The firm's silver pieces, ranging from elegant tea sets to intricate flatware, showcased a blend of Victorian ornate detailing and the sleek lines of the emerging Art Deco movement. The persistent popularity of Victorian and Edwardian styles in Canada showcased English influence, with ornate and intricate designs being common. The resurgence of the Georgian Revival style also led to the incorporation of symmetry, classical motifs, and refined ornamentation in Canadian silverware.
