Late 19th century Solitaire Board Game We are proud to offer a solid mahogany Victorian solitaire board with 33 stone marbles, also ideal for playing the game of fox and geese and the military game of German tactics. The board stands on three mahogany squat bun feet and has a good colour and original patination. The marbles are made from aged, coloured stone bare which is made from glass. Early marbles are very collectible and the marbles in this set are nominally 7/16 inches in diameter. They are made from a mixture of materials and colours; stone, clay (earthenware) and pottery. Popular in the court of Louis the XIV, the game was supposedly invented by a nobleman incarcerated in the Bastille in France during the 17th century and was popular in the court of Louis XIV. It is a challenging game for the fan of strategy and skill and became one of the more popular games of the last few 100 years. To play, place all 32 marbles with one hole left unoccupied in the middle of the board. The objective is simply to remove all but one of the marbles by jumping one marble over another, like the game of Draughts. The marble jumped is removed to the gallery around the side of the board Size in inches approx.: H 1” x W 9.5” x D 9.5” Period: Late 19th Century Material: Mahogany and stone Origin: United Kingdom Condition: Good Completely solid in structure and form, aged naturally across the surface showing loss of detail and fading in areas. A naturally aged object which has stood the test of time, so please expect age related wear as the photos aim to show however it is exceedingly difficult to photograph all the areas on this piece.
