Rare Artisan Christoforus Sklavenitis "Minoan" Ancient Greek Bronze Chess Set

About the Item

Rare handmade bronze complete chess set by Christoforus Sklavenitis, a famous Greek-Crete artist who was a student of Modigliani. The pieces were made with the lost-wax method, one side is natural bronze, the other oxidized, tallest being 5.5". The Minoan civilization (3500 BC - 1400 BC) was a Bronze Age civilization on the island of Crete and other Aegean Islands known for its advanced art, trading and agriculture as well as Europe’s first cities. Excludes board, size of pieces range from 1.75" to 5.5". Sklavenitis did not just make chess sets; he wrote poetry and books, created beautiful pottery and ceramics, made paintings, and hand forged bronze sculptures. He was an authority on Greek customs, art and culture.He co-authored many literary pieces including a book among many, "Popular Pottery in Western Crete". 1200
