Vintage Aries Backgammon Set in a Blue Briefcase 1970s

About the Item

Vintage collector Aries Backgammon set in a briefcase blue velvet fabric 1970s. This is an exclusive Aries of Beverly Hills Backgammon professional set crafted in an exterior blue wool fabric and faux beige leather. It securely closes with two brass plated latches. The handle is strong and can be easily carried. It opens beautifully to reveal a stunning backgammon game in blue and beige and would look absolutely spectacular in any home office, library as a center focal piece which would surely be the topic of conversation. Vintage original Aries backgammon set in briefcase, rare to find in blue wool fabric and faux beige yellow faux leather. Vintage Aries of Beverly Hills game board with brass accents, scoring bar, game pieces, cups and dice. The hardware is brass, and there is a brass scoring bar along the interior of the game pieces storage area. Game includes 15 game pieces in each color - blue and vanilla color + 2 additional pieces in each color still unused in bag. There are matching dices as well as 2 cups and a doubling dice. The set has an Aries brass tag on both the inside and outside of the case. Measures 15.75" w x 21" d x 1.25" h open. Measures 15.75" w x 10.5" d x 3" h closed. Great condition like barely or never used just the brass hardware that shows some patina. A wonderful travel set of Backgammon in carrying case with handle. Backgammon set is a carefully considered combination of materials - selected to suit all levels of play, from the professional player to the recreational and new player. The exterior case of wool blue fabric features defining stitch lines. The ball-cornered dice - to roll across the board - are casino quality precision dice. Resin pieces will move quickly across the playing field, and when not in play are stored in the lined compartments alongside the dice cups and the doubling cube. Colors are blue and white. Whether in the drawing room or in a more casual setting, this distinguished set will fire your competitive spirit. The smoking 70's were a decade of excess in more ways than one. Platform shoes, bell bottoms, and big hairdos remain as enduring symbols of this fabulous era. The 70's, however, were also the heyday of backgammon and Backgammon Fever was spreading like wildfire amongst the Hollywood jet-set and business elite. Celebrities, such as Mike Jagger, Lucille Ball, Omar Shariff, and John Huston were frequently photographed while playing backgammon. Clubs from coast to coast were bursting to capacity offering unlimited and memorable backgammon action. Upon hearing that Aristotle Onassis and his wife Jackie (Kennedy) Onassis held a party at which they surprised their guests with leather backgammon sets as gifts, Senor Aristi immediately began manufacturing backgammon boards for several European fashion houses. Aristi believed that Jackie and Aristotle had started a fashion trend for backgammon among their famous and wealthy friends. By 1976, Aries House was producing large quantities of leather backgammon sets for companies like Christian Dior, Nina Ricci, and Hermes. All the great backgammon players sported an Aries set when they travelled to tournaments around the globe. The House of Aries had become an international powerhouse. After a terrific run lasting more than 25 years, the economic crisis of the late 1990's marked the end for Senor Aristi's House of Aries. The brand was eventually sold. However, the backgammon sets created by Aries remained highly sought after commodities. They had become true collector's items. Compact and original. Easy to carry and store.
