Presented, is an exciting 1981 color lithograph by William “Billy” Phillips. Titled Through the Back Door, the lithograph depicts an American P-47 Thunderbolt pursuing a Luftwaffe bomber on the famous D-Day of WWII. Also referred to as a “Jug,” the P-47 was the largest and heaviest fighter aircraft powered by only one reciprocating engine. It was armed with four machine guns on each wing making it lethal for ground attacks. The busy scene focuses on the diving P-47 with “Miss Behave” painted on the side, but is full of action throughout the work. Providing a sense of movement, the background is blurred with multiple airplanes both in flight and on the ground. Fire and smoke billow from the field putting the viewer in the middle of the dramatic scene. The artist, William “Billy” Phillips is a renowned aviation and landscape artist. He is well-recognized and has received many awards for his artwork. Early in his career, Phillips was commissioned by the Royal Jordinian Air Force as an artist and later served as the U.S. Combat Artist. The U.S. awarded Phillips the Navy’s Meritorious Public Service Award and the Air Force Sergeants Association’s Americanism Medal. The celebrated artist additionally won the Art History Award twice and is one of the few individuals to be exhibited in a solo show at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. "Join the Army at Once & Help to Stop an Air Raid" Vintage British WWI Poster, 1915 This vintage British recruitment poster, published in 1915, calls on men to join the Army. In full, the text reads, “It is far better to face the bullets than to be killed at home by a bomb / Join the Army at once & help stop an air raid / God save the king.” On the poster, a silhouette of London lies beneath a spotlighted German Zeppelin looming above. This recruitment poster is displayed in a custom-built archival frame. WWI was the first time British civilians were in the direct line of fire in the modern era, creating the idea of the "homefront.’" Traditionally concerned with its coastal borders, Britain was highly unprepared for a sudden and prolonged German air raid. Throughout 1915 and 1916, successive German Zeppelin attacks ravaged several cities, but most notably London. These attacks continued until 1918, but newer aircrafts were used. An action-packed Japanese B2 poster for the 1969 British crime caper "The Italian Job," starring Michael Caine as cockney criminal Charlie Croker, fresh out of prison and planning a heist in Italy. 48 star, crocheted, antique american flag of the wwii era (1941-1945), a beautiful, homemade example, with a red, white, & blue hoist and flower-like stars: Crocheted American flag of the WWII era (U.S. involvement 1941-1945), with some interesting and beautiful features. Made entirely of cotton, the flag’s most notable attribute is the red, white, and blue color of its hoist. This was carefully stitched to the canton and the striped field with white cotton floss or yarn. The 48 crocheted stars are appliquéd to a length of navy blue plain weave cotton. With pierced centers, note how these more closely resemble flowers than stars, tipped this way and that on their vertical axis. Large, with respect to the canton on which they are placed, note how these crowd their boundaries and overlap into the field.
