About the Item

A charity container for the Jewish Institute for the Blind by Alfred Saltzman from Jerusalem in 1930 reflects the efforts to support education and welfare for visually impaired individuals in the early 20th century. The Jewish Institute for the Blind, was established in Jerusalem in the late 19th century to provide education, vocational training, and support services for blind and visually impaired individuals. It aimed to enhance their independence and integration into society. Alfred Saltzman was a renowned Jewish artist and craftsman who worked in Jerusalem during the early 20th century. His contributions to charity containers often reflected intricate designs, symbolic motifs, and a dedication to preserving Jewish cultural heritage. The charity container is made of tin, a secure lid with a slot for donations at the top, and is locked at the bottom,(Key not Included). Painted in brown and yellow and decorated with a depiction of a woman helping out a blind youth with the building of the institute and its surroundings in the background. Inscribed at the front is the emblem of the institute flanked by the institution's name in Hebrew and English and a verse from Yeshaya 42,15 below. The 1930s in Jerusalem were marked by significant developments in social services and cultural revival within the Jewish community under British Mandate rule. Charitable efforts, such as those supporting the visually impaired, reflected the community’s resilience and dedication to caring for its vulnerable members.
