About the Item
This silver zuz coin, weighing 3.30 grams, was minted during the Bar Kokhba Revolt, a Jewish uprising against Roman rule in Judaea from AD 132 to 135. Undated but attributed to the years AD 134/135, this piece is a powerful symbol of resistance and hope for Jewish independence. It has been officially authenticated and encapsulated by NGC Ancients, a leading coin grading and certification authority. The coin is sealed in a tamper-proof display holder that includes the company’s identifying barcode and certification number.
The obverse of the coin features a paleo-Hebrew inscription enclosed within a decorative wreath composed of stylized leaves and ribbon. The inscription refers to Simon Bar Kokhba, the leader of the revolt, whose name appears prominently on coins of this period as a declaration of sovereignty. The wreath’s contours are well-defined, despite natural age-related wear, and frame the inscription with a sense of ceremony and authority.
The reverse side depicts a ritual jug, likely a ewer used in Temple service, alongside a palm branch—an ancient Judaean symbol of victory and liberation. The accompanying inscription, also in paleo-Hebrew, supports the coin’s message of religious and political renewal. Although the surface of the coin shows signs of moderate wear, it retains significant detail in the imagery and lettering.
NGC has graded the coin as Choice Extremely Fine (Ch XF), reflecting the sharpness of its strike and overall preservation. The strike quality is rated 4 out of 5, with the surface receiving a 2 out of 5, indicating wear consistent with its age but with considerable features still visible. The coin remains a historically important artifact from one of the most dramatic episodes in Jewish antiquity, offering collectors and historians a tangible link to the last great revolt of Judaea against the Roman Empire.
Encased in a certified, barcoded holder by NGC, this coin combines numismatic value with historical depth and authenticity.
