Jewish Judaea Silver Shekel – Year 2 of the First Jewish Revolt (AD 67/68)

About the Item

This silver shekel, weighing 14.32 grams, was struck in Judaea during the First Jewish–Roman War, a significant period of resistance against Roman occupation that lasted from AD 66 to 70. Issued in Year 2 of the revolt, corresponding to AD 67/68, the coin was minted as a symbol of national and religious independence. On the obverse of the coin appears a finely detailed Omer cup, used in ancient Temple rituals, with a distinctive beaded rim. Surrounding the cup is a Paleo-Hebrew inscription reading “Shekel of Israel,” asserting the coin’s national identity and the revival of sacred traditions during a time of upheaval. The design is simple yet deeply symbolic, emphasizing spiritual purity and the sanctity of the Temple in Jerusalem. The reverse features a branch bearing three pomegranates, which were long-standing symbols of righteousness, abundance, and divine favor in Jewish tradition. Encircling the motif is another Paleo-Hebrew inscription: “Year 2 of the Freedom of Israel.” This phrase not only dates the coin but powerfully affirms the cause of the revolt — freedom from foreign domination. The border is framed with a dotted circle, adding an artistic touch that gives the piece a balanced and harmonious aesthetic. Certified by NGC Ancients, this specimen is graded Choice Extremely Fine (Ch XF), with a surface quality of 5 out of 5 and a strike rating of 3 out of 5. The details remain sharp and clear, especially the inscriptions and central imagery, and the surface is exceptionally well preserved, retaining the natural sheen of ancient silver. This coin is more than a monetary object — it is a powerful piece of Jewish history, reflecting a moment of defiant self-determination and profound religious meaning at the heart of the revolt. Every item in Menorah Galleries is accompanied by a Lifetime Certificate of Authenticity and additional documentation and information regarding the individual artifact and its culture.
