About the Item

Washington County, Georgia land deed with survey warrant and beeswax state seal granted by Governer Edward Telfair to Col. Robert Middleton. This land grant is from the controveral Pine Barrens Speculation, in which Georgia governor Edward Telfair made gifts of land grants exceding many times over the actual amount of land available. Additionally, the land was advertised as fertile, when in fact it consisted of pine barrens. The grants were limited to one thousand acres, but to bypass this law, the governors issued multiple grants to the same person. This is an example of a one thousand acre grant for land in Washington County, GA granted to Robert Middleton.
