Rare Bar Kokhba Revolt Jewish Silver Zuz (132–135 AD) — Grapes & Temple Trumpets
About the Item
This silver AR Zuz, weighing 3.13 grams, was minted during the Bar Kokhba Revolt, a defining moment in Jewish resistance against Roman rule between 132 and 135 AD. Struck in the third year of the uprising (AD 134/135), the coin is a powerful expression of national identity, religious devotion, and defiance.
It has been professionally authenticated and encapsulated by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), one of the most trusted names in coin certification. The coin is securely housed in a tamper-evident, barcoded holder with its certification number clearly visible. The label notes a grading of About Uncirculated (AU), with a strike quality of 4/5 and surface preservation of 3/5. The coin is also noted as overstruck, meaning it was struck over an earlier coin—often Roman—making it a symbol of reclamation and resistance.
The obverse displays a cluster of grapes hanging from a vine, a symbol of fertility and the richness of the land. Around the image is a Paleo-Hebrew inscription that reads "Shim‘on," referring to Simon Bar Kokhba, the leader of the revolt and messianic figure to his followers.
The reverse is especially rare and historically meaningful. It features two upright trumpets—an allusion to the silver trumpets used by the priestly class (Cohanim) in the Temple of Jerusalem. Surrounding them is a Paleo-Hebrew inscription that proclaims "For the Freedom of Jerusalem." Coins bearing this specific temple imagery are among the most sacred and uncommon types issued during the revolt, as they reference the restoration of Jewish worship and the longing for a rebuilt Temple.
Visually, the coin has retained striking detail. The grapes on the obverse are crisp and well-centered, and the ancient letters are still legible despite age and circulation. On the reverse, the twin trumpets stand tall and bold, framed by a ring of ancient text. The coin’s tone is rich with a natural patina, enhancing its historical character. The overstrike is subtly visible beneath the rebel imagery, offering a tangible reminder of the Roman coinage it replaced.
This coin is not only a rare collectible but a moving piece of Jewish history—an echo of a desperate but heroic struggle for freedom and faith.
