About the Item
A rare cuban cigar by repute smoked by Sir Winston Churchill
Churchill (Winston Spencer, 1874-1965). A partly used cigar, circa 1940s-50s, approximately 11cm in length and mounted on a faceted wooden plinth with a gilt glass stem and trim. All displayed within an early hand blown glass dome on ebonised base.
A legendary drinker, Churchill sometimes began his day with a glass of Scotch while still in bed and continued drinking throughout the day (although he was rarely noticeably drunk). His smoking habit was just as prodigious, as he puffed away through work, meetings and meals. But his oral fixation meant that he often chewed on the ends of his cigars, leaving them gummy and gnarled. So, he wrapped the cigars with a special kind of paper, which he called a “bellybando,” to keep them dry. He sometimes let the cigars continually burn without inhaling them, which may have limited the amount of tobacco he was actually taking in.
The cigar was recently acquired from a deceased estate via an established auction house in the uk. The cigar was originally mounted in a mid 20th century lucite display case with period typewritten note inside 'CIGAR SMOKED BY SIR WINSTON SPENCER CHURCHILL'
The case was stained within and just didn't do the piece justice so we had it professionally re mounted as you view it now. If you would like to see the cigar in its original case, these imagers are available on request.
