About the Item
Presented is a February 1957 signed letter by Winston Churchill to the English-Speaking Union, emphasizing the importance of good relations between the United States and Great Britain. The one-page letter highlights the celebration of George Washington's birthday and the friendship between the two countries. Addressed from the villa La Pausa, in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France, the typed letter is signed in blue ink “Winston S. Churchill” at the bottom.
The letter reads, in full:
"I send the George Washington Birthday ball all good wishes for success. The cause of the English-Speaking Union's Educational Trust is a most worthy one, and its work of furthering understanding and friendship between the English-speaking peoples is now more important than ever. Winston S. Churchill"
For the first time ever, the British celebrated George Washington's birthday in style in 1957, for the benefit of the English-Speaking Union, an international educational charity founded in 1918. Although the elderly Churchill was unable to attend, the great statesman respected the organization's worthy cause.
Having led his nation through the perils of World War II, Churchill watched as an expansive arms race grew during the Cold War, once again threatening the peace of the world. He was in a special position to understand trans-Atlantic relations, as his father was a member of the noble Spencer family and his mother was an American, born in New York. Just a month before writing this letter, the former prime minister gave a speech in which he emphasized his belief that world peace depended on a strong friendship between England and the United States, and hoped that his legacy would include having achieved as much for peace as he had gained in war.

Important Teddy Roosevelt Letter from White House June 1907
By Theodore Roosevelt
Located in Dallas, TX
Presenting A Very Important Teddy Roosevelt Letter from White House June 1907.
On ‘The White House’ letterhead. Typed and personally signed and amended by President Theodore Roosevelt.
With it’s original White House envelope, stamp and postage marks.
Dated June 14th 1907.
What makes this letter so important is the author, the office and the content.
It refers to the beliefs and opinions of the then President and First Lady (Edith) towards the women’s sufferage and empowerment movement that was the ‘hot topic’ of the time.
It is addressed to Eliza Calvert Obenchain who was a well known author at the end of the 19th Century and Early 20th Century. In 1905, Teddy referred to her book “Aunt Jane of Kentucky’ in a speech and recommended that every man in America should read it to understand ‘the plight of their womenfolk’. He regularly corresponded with her and we have a number of those letters in our collection. It appears that both he and Edith became big fans of Mrs Obenchain who was also heavily involved in the Suffragist movement.
The letters also provide a fascinating and historic record of Roosevelt’s personal beliefs and feelings on female empowerment.
The Letter Reads:
The White House
Washington
Oyster Bay, N.Y.,
June 14, 1907
Personal
“Dear Mrs. Obenchain:
I gladly accept the autographed copy of “Aunt Jane” which you have been so kind to send me. But Aunt Jane is so good and so wise that she must not (amount “race (illegible)) fall into the terrible mistake of the self-indulgent, selfish, shortsighted women, cold in heart and in temper, who shirk the duties of mother-hood and then try to cover up to themselves and to others their cowardice or self-indulgence by making believe they are actuated by wise or lofty motives. *
With great regard, believe me,
Sincerely yours,
Theodore Roosevelt
*And she must not give aid and comfort to unsexed or sexless creatures by a jest which they may take for earnest !
Mrs. Eliza Calvert Obenchain,
Bowling Green, Kentucky.“
The envelope is From: The White House.
Addressed to: Mrs. Eliza Calvert Obenchain, Bowling Green, Kentucky and marked ‘Personal’.
It is stamped on the front as posted from Oyster Bay, New York Post Office on June 16 1907.
It has a red 2 Cent...

Two Typed Letters Signed (TLS) by T. S. Eliot
Located in Middletown, NY
Two one-page letters on Faber & Faber stationery, SIGNED by T. S. Eliot. The first, dated 1 December 1949 is double sided, 10 1/4 x 8 inches (266 x 204 mm) in envelope 4 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches (110 x 133 mm). The second is dated 23 August 1950, one sided, 8 x 6 7.8 inches (204 x 174 mm) in envelope 4 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches (110 x 133 mm). Typed in black and red ink, central vertical and horizontal folds, with no sign of wear. The accompanying envelopes show minor signs of wear and the back flap of the first envelope is partially torn. Fine.
These two typewritten letters were addressed to Robert Cecil Bald (1901 – 1965), an Australian scholar of English Literature, who taught at Cornell University starting in 1937 and then at the University of Chicago from 1952 to 1965. They attest to a cordial exchange between a poet and a scholar, and the rich network of contacts that Eliot had both as an author and as the long-time editorial director at Faber & Faber in London (1925-1965).
In the first letter, dated 1 December 1949 with a Cornell University address, Eliot declines an offer...
