Extraordinary 18th Century Spanish Wooden Mannequin

About the Item

Extraordinary 18th Century Spanish Wooden Mannequin. Rare large size made of carved poplar with articulated joints retaining the original painted decoration possibly depicting a Saint. Made in Spain, circa 1790. 45" High 12" Wide 7" Deep An extraordinary and rare example of 18th-century Spanish craftsmanship, this articulated wooden mannequin, dating to circa 1790, was likely created for ecclesiastical or devotional use- possibly as a Santos Figure or lay model for religious vestment display. Standing at an unusually large scale, this piece is both a sculptural work of art and a deeply evocative artifact of spiritual history. Hand-carved in wood and retaining remnants of its original polychrome paint, the figure exudes a haunting elegance. The softly modeled face features serene, delicately rendered details, including painted eyes with an introspective gaze and subtly blushed cheeks. The mannequin's articulated joints- at the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees- allow for a range of expressive positioning, a testament to the skill and intention behind its creation. The surface bears a timeworn patina that only centuries can produce- layered with faded greens, earthen tones, and traces of gilding. Set upon a later custom base for support and display, the figure stands gracefully and securely. A striking and soulful addition to any serious collection of European devotional art, antique mannequins, or sculptural curiosities- equally at home in a gallery, studio, or curated interior. A truly museum-worthy object that honors the artistry and craftsmanship of 18th-century Spain!
