Gold and Agate Snuff Box Belonging to Anne, First Duchess of Buccleuch
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
This oval gold snuff box is inscribed with a crest of ‘a stag trippant’ within mantling of upright ostrich plumes tied with a bow, all below a ducal coronet and above a cypher of the entwined initials ‘B.A.B.’ for Anne of Buccleuch. English, circa 1670. Provenance: Anne, 1st Duchess of Buccleuch Anne Scott, 1st Duchess of Buccleuch (1651-1732) was a wealthy Scottish peeress. After her father died when she was a few months old, and her sisters by the time she was 10, she inherited the family’s titles. She was married, at 12 years old, to James, 1st Duke of Monmouth, the eldest illegitimate son of Charles II, then 14. Following the king’s death in February 1685, James spearheaded an anti-Catholic revolt to depose the new king, James II, and claim the throne from his uncle. The brief Monmouth Rebellion ended in defeat and James, by then Duke of Monmouth and Buccleuch, was executed for treason. The Duchess had six children by Monmouth, and a further three by her second husband, Charles, 3rd Baron Cornwallis, whom she married in 1688. She died in 1732 and was succeeded by her grandson, Francis, Earl of Dalkeith. The style of chasing used on this box is very reminiscent of a signed piece in the Gilbert...

17th Century Italian Bronze Horse Bit Boss
Located in Stamford, CT
Italian Baroque raised round bronze boss with spiral decorated dome framed by a border with arabesques. These hat-shape bit bosses, probably inspired by Ancient shield bosses excavated at the time, were very popular in Italy in the 16th and the early 17th century. Bit bosses were ornamental elements decorating both sides of a horse bit. The Metropolitan Museum has several examples of this type of bit boss in their collection. I have added a photo of a curb bit from the Met's collection showing how the bit boss was used as decoration on either side. Ex collection: Piero Tozzi Piero Vito Tozzi was an antiquarian, artist, restorer, professor and art dealer who had galleries in New York and Florence. Tozzi specialized in Italian decorative arts, sculpture and paintings. Tozzi’s collection included, among other items, Fra Filippo Lippi...

Diminutive 17th Century William and Mary Olive Oyster Miniature Chest of Drawers
Located in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
From the reign of King William & Queen Mary (1688-1702) England. The finely crossbanded and cross-grain moulded top is beautifully veneered in roundels of handcut olive oysters and lined in boxwood stringing in a geometric form. Over two short and two long graduating oak lined drawers, each veneered in oysters of olive and crossbanded. The top drawers opening on hidden spring catches. Similarly, the sides are also beautifully veneered in oysters of olive and vertically banded in figured long-grain olive. It should be noted that Miniature or 'toy' chests from 17th century England are extremely rare and no rarer than one veneered in olive oysters. To our knowledge, this chest is the only example available to purchase in the world. Personal comments - Quite possibly one of the most charming pieces of late 17th century English furniture...
