About the Item

Early 20th C. American phonograph, produced by the Kimberley Phonograph Company, as indicated by the plaque on the inside of the cabinet. The phonograph is housed in a wooden cabinet, featuring a classic, polished finish with brass hardware, and a crank-style mechanism for playing records. The lockable interior (ket retained) shows a turntable with a record, along with a brass tonearm and other original components. The label inside highlights Kimberley's tagline, "The Instrument for Particular People." The upper section of the cabinet opens to reveal the acoustic space for sound amplification. The lower section contains 6 tilt out compartments for housing records. This piece is an excellent example of early 20th-century home audio equipment. The Kimberley phonograph was likely made between the 1910s and 1920s, a period when the Kimberley Phonograph Company, based in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, was active. This era saw the rise of mechanical phonographs, which were hand-cranked and used acoustic horns for sound amplification. Dimensions: 49.5"h x 22.25"w (plus 4.75"w for crank handle) x 23"d Condition: Good/Fair. Was working but appears to have been overwound. Has additional needles (see photographs).
