About the Item

1930s Brass sextant signed Husun Trade Mark and made by H. Hughes & Son Ltd, a company active for about 250 years and specialized in the production of nautical instruments; instrument complete with optics and placed in an elegant original square wood box with closing hooks and brass handle. Brass frame with engraved silver goniometric scale embedded in the arch, with scale from 0 to + 130°, vernier with micrometric screw adjustment with built-in lighting and vernier reading, ebonite handle containing batteries for night lighting, four glasses colored for the fixed mirror and three for the mobile one, index and horizon mirror. A label placed inside the lid of the box indicates that the instrument was overhauled in 1942. Box 26.5x27.5 h 14.5 cm - 10.43x10.82x5.7 inches. Good condition and fully functional and complete with base for support made of wood and brass on measure. Shipping is insured by Lloyd's London; our gift box is free. The firm established by Henry Hughes in the 1830s became H. Hughes & Son in 1875, and H. Hughes & Son, Ltd. in 1903. After the merger in 1947 with Kelvin, Bottomley & Baird, Ltd., it became Kelvin & Hughes, Ltd. In order to measure a height of a star (for example, the Sun), you have to set the instrument in a vertical plane and, looking through the sight device, to mark out the line of the horizon visible through the non-silvered half of the fixed mirror. Moving the alidade that is together with this mirror, make sure that the light rays coming from the star, and then reflected by the mobile mirror and by the silver half of the fixed mirror, be directed from the fixed mirror to the observer: if you look through the sight device, you see the image of the star, obtained for double reflection, coinciding with the line of the horizon. The height of the star is expressed by the angle whose value is read on the graduated scale. The filter is used when the star is the Sun.
