About the Item

This exceptional Art Deco sailboat model sculpture is a stunning piece of period décor, blending craftsmanship and elegance. Expertly crafted in France circa 1930, it offers a stylized interpretation of the iconic Dragon-class keelboat. The hull, carved from solid Macassar wood, boasts a rich, warm patina that beautifully complements its gleaming chrome metal sails. With its sleek, streamlined silhouette and large, stylized sail arrangement, the piece evokes the refined aesthetics of early 20th-century maritime design. It rests gracefully on a stepped chrome-plated metal base, adding a touch of architectural sophistication. Though unsigned, the quality of the workmanship speaks volumes. An ideal desk accessory, this boat sculpture will appeal to marine enthusiasts, collectors, and lovers of Art Deco refinement. Measurements: 13 in wide (33 cm) by 3.57 in deep (9 cm) by 11.82 in high (30 cm). Reference: The Dragon is a classic one-design keelboat crafted by Norwegian designer Johan Anker in 1929. It gained international prestige in 1948 when it was designated an Olympic Class, a distinction it held through the 1972 Munich Games. Renowned for its graceful metre-boat lines and steadfast long keel, the Dragon's elegant profile has remained largely unchanged. The class originated through the Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club, which commissioned Anker to design an affordable dual-purpose boat suited for both cruising and racing, featuring approximately 20 square metres (220 sq ft) of sail area. Post–World War II, concerns over its speed led to modifications, including the addition of a genoa and a spinnaker to enhance performance.
