About the Item

This ceramic representation of the SS Normandie, created by the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique in the 20th century, beautifully captures the iconic French ocean liner. The piece is marked "Cie Gle Transatlantique Le Havre" under the base, ensuring its authenticity. The model measures 21.65 inches (55 cm) in width, 4.7 inches (12 cm) in height, and 3.9 inches (10 cm) in depth. The SS Normandie was one of the most famous ocean liners ever built. Launched in 1935, it was the largest and fastest passenger ship of its time, setting an Atlantic crossing record of just 4.14 days. A technological marvel, it remains the most powerful steam turbo-electric-propelled passenger ship ever constructed. Known for its groundbreaking design and opulent interiors, Normandie was a symbol of French luxury and innovation, influencing the "style paquebot" or ocean liner style in the Streamline Modern design movement. Although it was not commercially successful, the liner held the Blue Riband for the fastest transatlantic crossing several times during its service. During World War II, the ship was seized by U.S. authorities, renamed USS Lafayette, and tragically capsized in 1942 while being converted to a troopship. It was eventually scrapped in 1946 after an expensive salvage operation. This ceramic piece is a tribute to the grandeur and history of the SS Normandie, capturing its place in maritime lore.
