About the Item

This board was shaped for Buttons in the late 1970s or early 1980s. This is a team rider surfboard. The Clark Foam and O'Neill logo decals are under the fiberglass and were applied before the fiberglass was added. These decals denote sponsorship of the surfer. Small Faces Surfboards were manufactured in Newport Beach CA. The idea behind the name came from the Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood, Denny Lane band. The band's popularity combined with the concept of the many small faces that contribute to the the creation of a board and not just one "named" shaper is what gave this brand its name. Classic 1980's airbrush and wood twin fins. Montgomery "Buttons" Kaluhiokalani was a Hawaiian born and raised surfer and skateboarder. At the age of seven Buttons was riding his home break of Waikiki. A stand out skateboarder, Buttons watched the Dogtown movies of Tony Alva and Jay Adams skateboarding 3000 miles away in Venice California. What made Buttons unique and a thrill to watch was his ability to take these small moves into the water and onto the surf. Carving 360 degree turns, switchfoot cutty and up stalls. These moves were hard enough on land but in the water they were near impossible until Buttons showed us how. Buttons spent time in California in the late 1970s and early '80s. This board bears his name, B. Montgomery in pencil along the stringer at the rear of the board. Buttons died in Honolulu Nov 2 2013 of complications due to lung cancer; he was 57 years old. Montgomery Ernest Thomas Kaluhiokalani was born on the 30th March, 1959 in Honolulu, Hawaii. In the 1970s with a set of innovative surf lines and maneuvers he was the first to perform a carving 360 on film. In 1973, at the age of 13 Buttons traveled to the US Championships in Malibu, California, as an amateur where he placed second. Seven years later Buttons won the Sunkist Open at Malibu. Surfboard is marked #4707 B. Montgomery Features a 1/16" Redwood stringer and a glassed redwood twin fin.
