About the Item

Modern aluminum painted hanukkah lamp by Peter Shire features nine minimalistic structured candleholders. Each supportive base displays a multicolored aesthetic with pastel colors and industrial metal parts with geometric and cylindrical arrangements. The surface of this metal part appears to rest on a cylindrically supportive piece to create an artistic yet functional structure. The intersection of geometric designs demonstrates proportion, movement, and balance that collectively reflects post-modernist aesthetic. The Hanukkah lamp commemorates the number of days that the Temple lantern blazed; the ninth, shamash, standing farthest, serves as a help candle used to light the others from right to left. The Temple’s menorah, one of its most important ritual objects, burning for one day instead, the flame stayed alight for eight days, until a new supply of oil could be found, which made this the basis for the festival of lights celebration of Hanukkah. The name of the artist, Peter Shire is stamped and dated on the bottom of this modern multicolored Hanukkah lamp. Peter Shire is an American artist born in Los Angeles, California in 1947. He is renowned for taking familiar objects and reimagines their shapes, colors and materials to be undistinguishable to onlookers. Shire famously incorporates a mixture of pastels, hot colors, and industrial metal parts to challenge the modernist aesthetic of simplicity. This post-modernism was a key design principle of the Memphis Design Group to which Shire belonged. Every item in Menorah Galleries is accompanied by a lifetime “Certificate of Authenticity” and additional documentation and information regarding the individual artifact and its culture.
