About the Item

A rare Bauhaus-influenced set of nine Mid-Century West German ceramic vessels, produced by Laach Abbey, Ulmer Keramik, and others. Each piece bears symbolic motifs — Alpha & Omega, Chi-Rho, the Cross, or the Dove — uniting modernist design with sacred iconography. The Laach Abbey ceramics workshop was established by Theodor Bogler, a Bauhaus-trained artist, who brought the movement’s functional clarity and geometric restraint into liturgical art. Crafted between the late 1940s and 1960s, these vessels were originally designed to hold holy water or wine for church use, yet their sleek, sculptural forms transcend function and appeal strongly to design and ceramic collectors. The set showcases a range of distinctive shapes and finishes, from matte to glossy, in sage, teal, grey, and earthy tones. Several vessels are marked by Laach Abbey, one by Ulmer Keramik, while others carry only numerical marks or the “West Germany” stamp, reflecting the diversity of postwar ceramic production. The Alpha & Omega symbols (ΑΩ) refer to Christ’s “I am the beginning and the end,” while the Chi-Rho monogram (XP) and the dove each add layers of spiritual resonance. Originally conceived for liturgical service, these pieces now resonate as sculptural ceramics, design objects, and symbolic curiosities. In excellent condition with minor wear consistent with age, this complete set of nine vessels forms a true Wunderkammer collection — at once liturgical artifacts and modernist ceramics, a striking testament to the Bauhaus legacy in postwar Europe.
