About the Item
This American Arts & Crafts Torah shield from circa 1910, is a unique piece and is rare and valuable, both for its artistic merit and its cultural significance.
The American Arts & Crafts movement, which flourished from about 1880 to 1920, emphasized handmade craftsmanship, natural materials, and simplicity of form. This period saw a reaction against the Industrial Revolution's mass production and a return to handcrafted artistry.
During the early 20th century, Jewish communities in America were experiencing significant growth and change. Immigrants from Eastern Europe brought with them rich traditions and artistic styles, which merged with the prevailing Arts & Crafts movement. This period also saw the establishment of Jewish institutions and a desire to create ritual objects that reflected both American identity and Jewish heritage.
The shield is made from metals popular during the Arts & Crafts movement in this case silver plated, and the use of wood and velvet could also be seen, reflecting the movement's principles. Designed simply yet elegantly, with an emphasis on the handcrafted lions standing atop two pillars holding a Torah crown with encased gemstones above a Decalogue. These reliefs are beautifully decorated in foliate motifs with leaves and vines, as well as geometric patterns. High-quality workmanship with visible signs of handcrafting Techniques such as repoussé is prominent.
The lower plaque has an engraved dedication which is written in Hebrew; " (dedicated by) Avraham the Son of Zev, for an Eternal Remembrance of 'Dov the son of Aryeh', 'Channah the daughter of Talia', and 'Shlomo the son of Yehuda'."

A silver Torah breastplate is a meaningful ceremonial gift, often donated to a synagogue to commemorate significant occasions such as a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, wedding, birth, anniversary, or in memory of a loved one. It also serves to honour esteemed rabbis or community leaders, symbolising enduring respect and spiritual legacy.
* The Tablets of Stone (Hebrew: לוּחֹת הַבְּרִית Luchot HaBrit - 'the tablets [of] the covenant') can be found in the Hebrew Bible, Exodus 34:1. These were the two pieces of stone inscribed by Moses on Mount Sinai, with the Ten Commandments; later in Exodus they are referenced to as Tablets of the Testimony.
NOTE: The breastplate (Hebrew: ḥoshen mishpat) can be categorised as both a Torah ornament and Jewish ceremonial art. They are functional ornamental metal plates/shields which are suspended in front of the Torah scroll.
In the 17th century the breastplate was classically square or rectangular, however in the 18th century this developed to become more rounded with decorative borders. Further embellishments such as bells and small dedicatory plaques were suspended from the lower edge. These design features were influenced by the Torah Ark (Hebrew: aron kodesh...
